The trunk uses a spring. There are two "positions" for the spring. You want to move it to the outer one.

Open trunk | crawl inside | get comfy | look at the spring | move it to the next position...

but could you rig up a system where the shocks gone and instead the 2 arms go past being inline with each other and then when you bring the bonnet back down they keep going and "lock" against some tabs welded on? to close just lift the bonnet a tad and then flick the arms back. hard to explain and cant be bothered with a pic but I'm sure I've seen other cars or vehicles use a similar system.

          Use your head.

          Literally.

:p That's what I have to do sometimes.

N00bs. Drill the stock hood shock. Put a hole in it and slide a allen key threw it.

            Done and done

~1ft long 2x4 between the engine and hood... 100% reliable

Just because your shock still holds the hood up most of the time doesn't mean it's not bad. Replace it.

I used a piece of pipe that was about the size of the shock body. I cut it down to the lenth i needed the hood to stay up. For me it was about 2.5" long. I cut mine that short since i'm taking the e30 to car shows/cruises now, and i don't want the hood all the way open. But i'm sure this way would work with hood opened up all the way. I took the pipe and cut a section out of one side for it to slip over the rod on the shock. Then i position it so it rests on the part of the hood hinge where the rod of the shock attaches too, and the other end rest aginst the shock. I used it this weekend and when the wind blew, the hood stayed put.
