    Airbox with drilled holes

Who did this a few days back? I did it just a couple days ago, and the sound is awesome. I am wondering though, if you noticed a difference in performance. I am sure any gains are nominal at best, and perhaps even immeasurable, but I swear it "feels" as though mid to high is kickin' a bit more than usual. Thoughts?

TJ did it. it sounds louder, therefore you think your car is faster. Its not.

seems to me like it would make your car slower. the stock intake sucks in nice cool air from outside the engine compartment.

I did it, but haven't even started my car with it yet. I know its probably a worthless job, but I want to see what it sounds like.

Sound is the only reason to do it.

            But I'm still interested. 8)

Believe me, it sounds very good! I helped Bobby do this yesterday and we were both amazed at the sound-it totally changes the 'character' of the car. I recently installed the Dinan carbon fiber CAI on my E36 M3/4 and the sound is very similar, although obviously mine is louder since the filter is more exposed and the S52 sucks in more air.

I also tend to agree the peformance gain is minimal to non-existant (more of the placebo effect), but the sound alone is worth it. And coming from someone that is usually against modifications that is saying a lot. As far as drawing in more hot engine bay air, sure it does somewhat. But I tend to think that since the majority of the airbox is still enclosed, and the holes are on the opposite side of the engine, that there is little effect in that regard. One negative is the requirement of changing the air filter more often due to its increased exposure, however that is not a big deal IMO.

Of course now it makes me want to do this on my E30 M3...I wonder how it would sound...I think I just might have to find out.

I did it after thinking I wouldn't sounds great! not too loud just right! It's impossible to see the differance it made in my car because at the same time I changed the chip & put in a K&N between all three the car is MUCH faster!

does the position and/or size of the holes make a difference?

Not sure what others did, but I will try to post pics maybe tomorrow. I used a fairly big bit, can't remember the size, but will inform tomorrow.

Yeah, I did it a while ago. Drilled a bunch of 3/8" holes on the left hand side of my airbox. Sounds sweet, not really noticable below 3krpm as it is drowned out by my exhaust, but above that it really growls

Sound is cooler. Intake is hotter.

Will it truly affect performance to the point where I will lose a significant amount? Or will it be barely noticeable in losses... Because I really want that sound, but not too much on the loss factor.
Me: "I can't wait to redline my car!"
Mark: "Didn't you just break a rocker arm?"
Me: "Yeah, I don't think I've learned my lesson."
                              Mark: "You never will."
