After finding out that the thread is on the 2nd page of the E30 forum there...I realized...he posts here. I read the story, seems weird. Went out on his car on the freeway after he felt and heard a pop/break/thing.
He's a newer member here. Post dude, too lazy to go find out his username there.
Busted GC kit spring? That's a first for me. As mentioned, the spring is actually made by Eibach (for GC) so if you're looking to direct the blame, go to the source.
Seeing that strikes me as a bit odd. I know several E30 folk with GC suspension on their cars and they have had zero problems with them. Many of these guys track their cars too. Those springs show some paint scuffing where the coils came into contact. Looks like soft shocks were paired up with these.

Or possibly just too soft of springs. The first set they sent me in the rear were WAY too soft and I had a lot of coilbinding issues...but never broke. Also, dirt looks more like rust with a flash I've noticed, so it could look worse than it is. If it was due to rust, you 'd see rust through the cross-section of the coil where it broke. Since they're the barrel shaped springs, I'm guessing it binded far enough, that the wider part of the spring maybe slipped down lower than the loop beneath it...if that makes sense.
