I'd never work on a car without proper jack stands in place, but that aside, I have seen and helped people remove lowering springs in similar fashion. The key is to make certain you preload the spring by jacking up the control arm a slight bit, prior to loosening the top strut nut; enough that you compress the spring a bit, but not enough to lift car off jack stand. If you don't preload the spring, it will shoot hard at the jack and trouble may follow. Can't imagine that this would work on stock height springs though...Comment
