IMO 17's are pushing it, 18's would be way too big for a non M E30.

I'm going to end up with 17's running 215 40 on ESM 002 17x8.5, but I'm not going to like it. Really want that bbs/weave style wheel and there are 0 options at 18. :-(
I want a nice set of smoked MHW's (I know, get it line)

Sure there are, just not in a 4x100. How bad do you want to go 18"? Give the 17" ESM's a try.

Pretty bad, but I also don't want to spend to much more that $1000. My options were either either drill and fill style 5's or esm's. Besides super rs (which would cost my arms legs), what other weave wheel do you have in mind at 18? I don't mind doing a fill and drill.

I'm not the most crazy about chrome wheels, however how much are you asking? Those mag wheels you had on it (not sure what kind), looked awesome although they were smallish. And those e46 m3 wheels definitely don't look too big.

They are raw aluminum just polished, not chrome. So powder coating the centers any color you want would be easy.
Im asking 2k shipped. I have wellll over that into them. PM me if you want to talk more.

I say 18's can only really work with plenty of low and MT2 kit, no stock body.

Correct me if I am wrong here as I am rather rusty, but 17 > 15. Perhaps you meant tire diameter.

I tend to think going too low on tire diameter looks silly too, but there is a threshold beyond which it doesnt matter. Don't forget, early etas came with 195/60r14s--23.2" total diameter. A bit shorter than 23.8" the other two are at.

The 215/40/17 is 0.42% smaller than 205/55/15. That is such a small amount it is negligible in the real world. As long as you're within 3% of the stock diameter you'll be fine. For instance 235/40/17 is 2% too big but many people run them and like the look.
