$1500 for e30 wheels is excessive enough...

Does that extra grand give you that much of an edge over something like 15x7 kazeras? Those should (if not already) be made in e30 appropriate offset.

Ironically, people don't stress so much over tire weight, when it has a much greater effect on the overall moment of inertia.

No use crying over something you have no control over. In the world of autocross, grip and size availability trump *everything* else.

they are 13.1. for the money they are the best wheel for the track.

WHY do you need such light wheels? Seriously.

Say your E30 was already the best...at everything else it could possibly do.

Say the final thing on the car left to perfect was paring down the weight.

Just along those lines...thinking about what a super E30 would need to make it as good as it could possibly be.

In auto-x, first and fifth place often differ by less than one second...

Hey you know an E30 isn't a camera and you don't need to buy the best everything to use it, right?

Who cares, stop being a pondering nerd and just drive.

                  LOL.

You don't get it, do you?

Why are you even in this thread?

I asked a question -- let me refresh your memory:

"[What is the] Absolute Lightest 15x7 E30 Wheel That Does NOT Require Spacers?"

It's obviously a question that hasn't been turned into a thread of any consequence, because as you can see there doesn't seem to be one definitive answer so far.

Or maybe you can't see, because you decided to be a little R3v smartass instead of trying to contribute something.

But I digress: The purpose of the thread is to determine the answer to the question posed as the subject. It's really something that I'd like to know. It's not the kind of question someone would have an opinion on, i.e. "What's the best intake for an E30?". That would be opinion based -- weight is an absolute. It either is the lightest or it isn't. Period.

Regardless, you seem to have missed the gist of the post which you chose to quote, in which I suggested that perhaps if someone already had an E30 which was improved in every other conceiveable category (a few examples: chassis stiffness, braking, power, weight balance), they would be interested in shaving a few extra pounds off of their wheels.

Isn't unsprung weight equal to eight times itself in sprung weight? Therefore, one unsprung pound would be equal to eight pounds of sprung weight?

In any event, it's obvious from the fact that a 15x7 Volk TE37 can weigh about 8.5lbs that someone thinking that the 15x7 Team Dynamics at about 13lbs is the lightest e30 wheel might just be wrong. If you do the math using the 1:8 comparison I gave above, the difference in "sprung weight" reduction going from the Team Dynamics to the Volk would be 144lbs. That's quite a bit of weight reduction, especially for a car that's already been pared down to the basic essentials.

Is it making any sense to you now?

Seems to me like thinking along those lines will empty a bank account and will still leave you with nothing more than just an e30. I guess when you have unlimited funds it doesn't matter.

E30 racer - some cloud cover in between your run and the next guys' can make the same difference - why are you being so pretentious? Since when is auto-x the topic of the thread?

We all empty our bank accounts into our cars anyways. If he wants to pay $2,000 for a set of rims, what makes him any different from a guy that spends $1,000 on a set of rims and $1,000 in a body kit and paint?

Funds don't have to be unlimited, they just have to be plentiful.

BTW, yes, an E30 will always be "just an E30", but that's why BMW makes more than one model of car :).

1:8 - this is not a static ratio! The benefits of less rotational mass/less unwanted moment of inertia is not a linear relationship.

There are many other factors, particularly the weight distribution as you go through the radius of the wheel, etc. In other words, an 11 lb wheel can potentially be "faster" than a 9 lb wheel if the majority of its weight is at the hub as opposed to the outer extremities. Anyways, not here to have an argument, I just think that putting "gold plated wheels on a scraper" is an improper use of resources.

Take a look into kazeras, as I've mentioned earlier - I believe they are 11 lbs or so and cost something like 99$.

Thank you for the physics info. I didn't even take physics in high school, and being a college dropout...well, I didn't take it there either :).

I understand what you're saying re: placement of weight relative to the radius of the wheel.

As far as the Kazeras: I'm not really interested in dopping 2lbs (from my current Team Dynamics 1.0's at 13lbs). I'd like to go lower.

I haven't heard back from Kodiak about their wheels, but I don't expect them to be under 10. Maybe they'll surprise me.

I don't think Volk made their TE-37 Magnesium in 15x7, unfortunately.

Regardless, I'm not sure where to go to find a set or find info on having a set of blank TE37's drilled to 4x100.

Here's a good resource on wheel weights for Miatas. These would obviously transfer over to the E30 (the weight listings would, I mean) if it were possible to get those wheels in ET25 4x100.

For what it's worth, I'm finding info that the Volk CE28N is lighter than the Volk TE37 (both forged). The TE37 Magnesium is of course lighter than either.

And just how have you come to that conclusion?

I bring up auto-x as a specific example of why someone would be interested in spending the $$$ it takes to go lightweight. Competition. Way different than pimping around your high school parking lot.
