I just bought an 89 325Xi and the guy I bought it from was warning me that I should not buy used tires, because it is very important that ther tires have even wear on the tires, otherwise it is hard on the differential. Is that true? He also says that you should rotate the tires much more frequently. If I buy new, any reccomendations?

The even wear thing is true to an extent, although he's making it sound a little more serious than it is. Otherwise, every time you turn the wheel you'd be breaking stuff (the tires turn at different speeds as soon as you're not going straight).
You'd have to tell me what you want from the tires before I can recommend anything. Also, are they for the stock 15" weaves? -
conti extreme contacts. i got on my winter wheels. they are all seasons but nice all around a/s tire esp for winter. i blew threw everything when it snowed.
Ive never had good luck with used tires....Comment

Thanks for the info. So would you go so far as to say don't run used tires? I suppose one could check the tread depth on each tire to make sure they were the same. If they are, I guess I can't see a problem.
Yes they are the stock 15" tires.
I also have an 88 325i convertible that I drive in the summer, so the Xi will be my winter car. I am looking for good winter driving, but I don't think I need snow tires, because even in Minnesota the city roads are clean most of the time. So, I am leaning towards traction and medium cost.
Any ideas? Or should I just go to Sams club and get the BF Goodrich tires. That is what is on the car now. The guy who sold it to me said they had a "V" rating. I never heard of that before. I have "T" rating on my convertible, I think.
Conti Extreme Contacts were recommended above. Thanks! I never heard of them, but I will google them.Comment

if it's a "winter" car driven on mostly clear roads, I would get falken 912s and be done with it.Comment

The ExtremeContacts are great, I used them last year on my M3 and this year they're going on my Ti. Way better than winter tires on dry/wet roads, and still 90% as effective in the snow/ice.Thanks for the info. So would you go so far as to say don't run used tires? I wouldn't recommend the 912s for any type of snow possibility. They're particularly bad, even for all-seasons. If you want to buy from Sam's the BFGoodrich Traction T/A is a good tire, but again, pretty bad in the snow.
Oh, and...
