Awkward when you see an e30 with a non-enthusiast?

I always give a little wave or a nod to older Bimmers around town but I rarely get anything back... 2002 and E24 owners are better than the rest about this (here at least) but it's still at an unacceptably low level...

Just old people around here and with that said there is only like 5, mine included. I have only seen 2 enthusiasts with a schwartz late model and a guy with a red 89 635.

Not that fortunate, I would LOVE to have a classic like that, mine was an '83 Supreme. The suspension is more of a comfort/squishy kinda feel compared to the E30's. I kinda got tired of being asked,"When are you gonna put hydraulics in it?" I guess the brakes don't count.

This happens all the time too. I get waves from guys in E39/E60 M5's and E46/E9x M3's all the time, and it catches me off guard. Usually I dont expect any attention from them when I'm cruising in my old car. They usually have to honk or flash their lights to get my attention.. haha.

A few thoughts on this... in Jersey, if you high beam someone it's immediate grounds for some form of road war or offensive gesture. Doesn't matter what you're driving or they're driving.

When I had my E28 M5, a middle aged guy came up to me and asked me what year it was. I told him it was an '88, the only year they sold the E28 M5 in the US market. I then asked him what he was driving, and he responded, "a 2002". Barely able to contain my excitement that I somehow managed to find a BMW enthusiast in Northern NJ (cause most people around here are asshats) I then ventured to ask what year '02 it was, thinking maybe it was a roundie. He looked at me quite confused for several seconds, and then flatly restated, "I told you, it's a 2002. You know, just a regular 325i...". That was the end of that conversation.

When we still had my wife's E30 325iXa, I would drive it more frequenty than she did and never once got a wave, a compliment, or anything. It was a lazure blau 4 door with beckers black lights, no rust, and regularly detailed... probably one of the nicest iX's in the area, and I believe is still somewhere in NJ (Matt, you out there??). But if my wife was driving it solo she would regularly get guys stopping her and asking her all sorts of questions about the car. Something about a cute girl driving an E30 that changes people's attitudes I guess...

                    Totally agree with this...

Ive had E30s for a while now and parked at least 2 on the street at the same time. Never seen another unitil this summer when some rando cam eup and macced it to my Gf while she was parking the cabrio.

He was ina POS rusted ass ES. But hey, at least i saw another E30.

now i just need to get new paint on my rusted ass cabiro...

When i come across another e30 i try to see how the driver is and the condition of the car. If he is an old guy or a woman or if the car looks neglected i don't bother to beam.
Usually young people (around 20-25) on motorcycles at traffic lights, stare the car from top to bottom and give me a thumbs up or say things like: "nice e30" or "e30 forever". I think over here especialy for young guys the e30 isn't just "another old car"

I rarely get compliments or exchange of looks from anyone that drives a BMW or e30. I generally get compliments from random people at gas stations and random places that used to own one. It is nice to hear people saying that they'd like to pick up another one as a project after seeing mine. I try to push them to get one.. save as many as possible!

haha, yeah. But to that point if If I had a dollar for every person that looked at my E30 and said 'nice car, I used to have one exactly like it', I would have, umm, like 20 bucks or something - haha! (I don't get to drive my car all that much nowadays).

I don't try to get into futile arguements, and I'm not all high-and-mighty becuase mine is an M3, but I usually say to them 'Oh, a six-cylinder!?', more often than not they say yes and I leave it at that, LOL

i get the most akward looks ever. just the other day i saw this really nice late model alpine coupe that was mint. i parked and got out to look at it. i was there for a while admiring it in my own way when this smoking hot chick came out and saw me doing this.. i got a really odd look and then she made a call. i left right away.
