    Interesting MAF conversion

    I saw this posted on bimmerforums. It's an MAF conversion using an Hyundai Bosch 1.6L MAF. It seems to be a pretty cheap conversion although what I'm really more interested in is the application of the software he mentions for an e36 MAF. I have a 97 M3 MAF I was thinking about adapting later on.

        its funny, Hyundai and Kia use a lot of German parts

        some new ones have 4hp18 trannys
        1989 cirrisblau-metallic 325i

          This is nothing new. People were doing this with units like SMT6, back in the day. Hyundai/Kia MAFs are also direct replacements on some E39's, etc. They use them as a cheaper alternative to BMW branded MAFs. The poster mentioned "EPROM emulating ECU" but doesn't mention any particular unit. Which EPROM emulating ECU did he get for next to nothing?

            Problem is, it needs tuning. I want more info on that EEprom setup he has though.

                My thoughts exactly. Until someone can come up with an inexpensive chip that'll work with this, then there's really not much of a point.

                Because if you have to piggyback it, might as well MS it and remove the damn AFM altogether.

                  This guy didn't even have to piggyback it, but he is using a EEprom programmer. That in itself is expensive and costs close to MS. So yea it's pretty much useless. Until someone finds a way to connect it without having to do any tuning, or even getting a chip tuned for it, it's useless. But the MAF will MAYBE give you 1-3hp ontop of a chip. Not really worth it IMO.

                    he said it ran fine with the hyuandi maf albeit a bit on the rich side. you can use a potentiometer to tune a maf by adjusting the output to the ECU it sees, its not too hard. however this does have its limitations. but with how he describes it. a pot should work.

                    heres a link on how to accomplish this easily. read parts 5 and 6.

                        unfortunately, it doesn't quite work that way. the signal from the AFM is not linear, and the MAF is. a potentiometer is not going to comepensate for that.

                        but if you guys want to keep pursuing a MAF conversion as if it were the holy grail of a magic 20whp and throttle response from a stock M20, don't let me stop you.
