+1 e34 touring... one of the coolest grocery getters still.
We went through the same deal a year ago... growing family = bigger car. We went with a 95 e34 touring... picked it up off of Craigslist for under $4K... spent $125 for a a pre-purchase inspection from an independent bmw shop to make sure we weren't throwing away cash.
We've had the car for over a year, no real issues... all our friends with mini-vans hate us. 20 to 22 mpg around town... some highway driving. The cargo space is perfect for everything and the fold down seats convert the touring into a near pick-up.
There is plenty of DIY write ups... as pointed out earlier in the thread you are going to have make sure the dual sunroof was looked after... make sure there are no issues with the hatch / harness... other than that it’s a great ride. Just be picky... and you will get a good deal.

Good choice. I'm trying to convince myself i don't need an e39 touring. I'm loosing the battle. LOLYour signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

Excellent choice. Pop by the bf.c E34 section if you want to see plenty of nice examples.
Here's one more of mine. $1400, a spare set of wheels and some junkyard parts later:
1987 E30 cabrio | Bumper swap | H&R Sport | Koni Yellow | Eibach Sways | BavAuto strut bar | Cardinal seats
MTech2 wheel | Husco Armrest | Smoked Hella Smileys | 5k HID | Stromung | RS003 | Shadowline | Amber Fogs | Too much else to list

however, yes you could def get an m50 powered e34 touring in that pricerange. Though it will be automatic.
