Been around for awhile. The privateers in UK ran that in their DTM series but I believe it was under 2.0L. -
I would imagine the M50 swap would be slightly easier in the larger engine bay of the E28. I would assume you wouldn't need to do a custom brake booster and wouldn't have the clearance issuses associated with the headers. But you know what assuming does. Ass/u/me. We might just have to see. Right now this is just sort of an empty dream.
Anyone know for sure? Or know where pictures can be found if they do exist (which is very likely)?Comment

If you were going to go to the trouble, I would much rather do an S50. That would be so awesome in an E28. Talk about a sleeper!Originally posted by riverdale21I would imagine the M50 swap would be slightly easier in the larger engine bay of the E28. There would be no issue with BBK's, since you would be able to run so many kinds of wheels, due to the 5-lug hubs.Comment

I was referring to the clearance issue between the intake manifold and the brake booster on E30s w/M50s not for the braking power.Originally posted by Eurospeed88There would be no issue with BBK's, since you would be able to run so many kinds of wheels, due to the 5-lug hubs.Comment

You mean S38?Originally posted by Jon325iJust get yourself an '88 M5 with the S88 motor and pull two of the sparkplug wires :finger:Originally posted by E30ownerwithanopinionbut while we are at it why not and E28 S14?
The S14 is an S88 with 2 cylinders chopped off.

Seeing that a solution has been developed for the E30 with a twin cam (a la modified 320i booster), I'm sure a similar approach can be taken with the E28. Its just a matter of finding out what works best. In addition to the booster, there are some rotor/caliper combos from newer (and heavier) BMWs that should fit onto those spindles...thus further improving braking performance.Originally posted by riverdale21I was referring to the clearance issue between the intake manifold and the brake booster on E30s w/M50s not for the braking power.
The S38 is more or less an evolutionary development of the S88....and were used to motivate the E34 M5s. Not sure what changes were made between the two, but the S88 was good for close to 290bhp whereas the S38 made just over 300 in stock trim.Originally posted by DigitalwaveYou mean S38?
And while on the topic of newer power into older Bimmers, what about an E24 with an S50? Now that would be a shark with some bite ;)

M50 swaps have been done in the 6er if I remember correctly, since it's not too much different than swapping one into a 5er. If it's going in a Coupe though, why not use a 3.0CS(L)? :POriginally posted by Jon325iSeeing that a solution has been developed for the E30 with a twin cam (a la modified 320i booster), I'm sure a similar approach can be taken with the E28. Speaking of 3.0CSL there is a M6 engine powered 3.0CSL in the new BImmer magazine December '04. Just picked it up today.Originally posted by Stu McIf it's going in a Coupe though, why not use a 3.0CS(L)? :PComment

If i'm not mistaken, you're talking about ETCC.. and they ran 320i's... which are S42's..Originally posted by M-technik-3Been around for awhile. My room-mate has an '88 528E and we swapped an "i" head on it from george's 325i M30 project. The car runs much better in the high RPM's now and with the 3.73LSD instead of 3.25 open it works quite well. still MUCH slower than my 535i...'88 M3.2 S54 Lachssilber/Black
