    Progress on my 2002ti...

    Hey guys-
well, I have been pretty busy working on my 2002ti with george and our buddy Will (who just bought Dave Adam's M3 project, so he will probably be on these boards soon). I have the exterior mostly stripped, along with the engine bay in preperation for bodywork/paint.
While I had the motor out I decided to pull the head because of a seeping headgasket. Then I decided to replace the valve seals "while I was in there" since they were leaking a little oil. I ended up doing a 3-angle valve-job and hand lap on the valves and now I havea freshly rebuilt M10 head. The block has been bored .5mm and has 2nd oversize pistons already which are nice and tight/low mileage so I didnn't touch them. I need to yank the timing cover to get the Tii injection cover off and put on the standard M10 cover and alt bracket. I also got a new clutch and some other components for car that are good to replace while everything is apart.

The engine bay is getting sandblasted in a few minutes in my driveway here and then I am going to use truck bed liner with a roll on brush to make a durable finish in the engine bay. I *might* paint over it, I havn't quite decided yet.

All in all its going well, steady and smooth.
Here are the pics so far:

The engine bay wiring is a mess and has all been removed. I am using another harness to replace this god-aweful bundle of crappy wires...

    can you say "hacked"?

new parts... got a 320i radiator as a upgrade...

getting torn down... that rust is only on the surface, it cleans right up I swear....

Tii injection, which is all removed and cleaned now, need to list it on e-bay this weekend...

This is an old clifford alarm, with a 5/83 production date!! I'm glad to have that removed...

I removed all the A/C components as they didn't work anyhow, and they weighed in at 55lbs!! Nice weight savings off the front-end.

    damn rear engine pull hook...

here she comes... now you can see my Sthal header... I just bead-blasted the rust off and will now paint it black.

the E12 Head was pretty clean.. has an '83 production date so it was replaced at some point.

Block looks very nice, no ridge in the cyl and the pistons are 89.47mm 2nd overbore with minimal carbon.

    All done...

More updates to come as I unravel this mess...

Excellent work Ryan. It looks like the engine bay has mainly surface rust.....nothing too serious I hope. The 02s are very cool.....and utterly simplistic in their engineering. This one is going to be fun to watch as you sort it all out.

    Keep at it man

Yea, 3 cars... I need to sell my E28 ASAP. If anyone is interested please make me an offer and come get her this weekend!!
I will drive my M3 everyday once I get the E28 sold, then it is one week projects at a time from here on out on the 02. I needed to pull the motor to paint the engine bay and now I am doing all the "while you are in there..." parts and jobs.
Next up is the pedal box and heater-box rebuilds, yay!

Why are you selling the e28?

That would be the rice air filter that was on the tii injection parts...
that can be seen better in this pic:

Why are you selling the e28?
Because I need the money for this project more than I need the E28. Also, I am 22 years old and I don't feel like owning/maintaining/insuring 3 cars right now... I want the 02 as my daily driver so I am dumping some money and time into it to get it up to snuff. I like the E28 and its a great car, but I just can't hang onto it any longer...

Looks awesome Ryan. I can't wait to see the progress on this one.

Why a truck bed liner in the engine bay though? That seems so ghetto. I didn't think engine bays needed durable coatings.

That actually sounds like a pretty good idea if you ask me. Keep it looking nice forever, easy clean up of spills, and no dents or scratches from tools or dropping the engine in.

I love the idea of this kind of project. I hope to do something simliar when I have the time/money.

Can't wait for more of the progess and before/after pictures. Awesome.

                            if I knew what i was doing, I would've bought a 2002 and fixed it up. But since I don't, I bought the 318iS.

                            Looks like a sweet project!

All that rust is just on the surface. Not even as thick as a layer of paint. You can get to a clean surface with your finger nail - or at most some sand paper. It's not "INTO" the metal at all.

I am simply amazed at the prices for 2002 stuff. I defiently putting a SMOG exempt 2002 on my "must own as a project car" some point in my life.

Can't wait to start putting the motor back together...
