MMm! that would certainly be a tasty motor in an e30.

Too bad you still get just 12mpg too.

I dunno, my friend's ford diesel truck tops out at about 80 (the rev limiter). must be a different motor.

C'mon man, I'm not talking about Fords here. I'm talking about BMWs. This is after all an E30 forum. Even though I am discussing the possibility of swapping a motor into an E28. Whatever, same brand.

At any rate what was your fuel consumption for your M41 powered car? And was power sufficient to be a comfortable daily driver?

Can a diesel motor be modified the same way as a petrol engine? Like spark plugs and wires? J/k. I know they dont have those.

What I mean is turbo wise. Can you use a turbo designed for a petrol car of the same displacement or does a diesel motor have different flow requirements. I know the power band is a lot narrower for a diesel so I would have to take that into account. Anyone know?

                        I think it's easier
you can increase more power with just a simple chip

                        exemple:
                        a local tuner claims 190hp and 390Nm for an M47d20tu engine ('00 E46 320d)
and I know people with that chip they were talking about 215hp on the dyno

I was going to try (eventually) to find an M51 from a E34 525tds and cram it into an E28. I am aware of the usual avenues of diesel performance... larger injectors, chips, exhaust, manifolds, etc. The only thing I was curious about was the turbo.

I would imagine you would want something with a slightly smaller diameter than a traditional petrol engine of the same displacement to compensate for the shorter rev range. That way you can make full boost before 4250rpm or something like that. Now I just have to find some compressor maps and calculate air flow to see what kind of turbo could make enough boost at such low rpms.

Another question I have... does anyone know how much boost stock turbo diesels usually run? Also what do they redline at?

and redline at +- 5.250 rpm

.7 bar at idle? So it's 2.0 bar max boost.

the most i've heard was 2.0 bar (VW)
in general it's around the 1.4 bar
