    i drove all winter with no weight. just slow down a little.

      Weight only helps initial off the line traction, but in every other situation it hurts more than it helps. You have an extra 300 lbs to stop and turn. I only ever carried a 10 lb bag of rock salt, mini-shoven and a pair of tire chains and never had to use any of it.

          the 318is with snow tires and LSD is surprisingly good in the snow, I think partially because it's super light. adding weight just means it's going to be harder to control and stop. Just be easy on the clutch/throttle.

            I agree, adding weight has its disadvantages. I do think I would benefit from a good set of winter tires though.

            Not to hi-jack the thread, but any tire suggestions? Not much snow in Portland, but it gets cold and occasionally icy.

              I had no problems last winter in colorado with snow tires and no weight, even on a snowpacked hoosier pass, or a hardpacked ski mountain parking lot. I did have a LSD though.
