Well guys, I need some help.

So I just swapped the differential in my car. It was installed properly, driveshaft connected properly and everything. I took it out for a drive for the first time last night, and it ran beautifully, until I got on the highway. The car kind of hopped a few times and then eventually the wheels locked and i skid to the side of the road. There was no oil in it. I dropped it again this morning, and it was bone dry.

When I bought the car the guy gave it to me and said it was ready to go and just painted. I never would have thought someone would drain the oil from a differential or WHY someone would ... so just never thought to check.

Anyway, does anyone know if its totally screwed? (I'm 99% sure it is), or is there ANYTHING I can do to restore it? I already found a guy local with another LSD I can buy, but obviously, I'd prefer not to.

Here's a video of the hideous sound it was making

That thing is gone. You must drain the diff to ship. That sucks man, but ya, you should have checked the oil and just put fresh oil in.

    Glad you are ok.

Eh I would let it cool. See if it unfreezes itself up. If not then yea you'll need all new bearings.

I did this same thing a few years back after an engine and drivetrain swap. I put the diff in and a few months went by. I got the swap done and forgot the diff was empty. i was so concerned about all the little details and forgot that one important one. Got the car up to 100 on a backroad with open headers and it locked tight. it was a handful trying to keep it on the road from 100-0 with the rear wheels locked.

The exact same thing happened to me, except I was on the highway. It ran beautifully until then.

So everyone agrees that its completely fucked?

No doubt 100% Make a cool table or something with it, because that is pretty much all it can do right now.

you could always just throw some diff fluid in there and just see. it'll only cost you $10.

but yeah, i think you're pretty much effed.

i did that to my rx8s transmission. except i had changed fluids 2 months before that and it was in the dealership that morning to align the ppf (part of the drivetrain, connects trans to diff). something tells me they drained the fluid and forgot to put it back in....

                          that was $3000.

you're lucky this is just a tenth of that. but i understand your pain.
