I think they are the same, just the coding plug on the cluster itself that is different.

      Anyone confirm?

Mine on my old e30 did this a couple times if I had the battery unplugged, what worked for me... (and I have no idea why or how this works) was to get the ecu into open loop mode for a couple second. (e.g. Floor it and rev it to 5k rpm) the tach would always just jump right up to its proper position and work as normal after that.

Tried this at lunch today, unfortunately it did not work.

So no one else has any ideas on the tach? It's really not that big a deal, I can tell when I need to shift without it, it just annoys me when stuff doesn't work.

When my SI batteries died my tach died as well. Not sure if this could be related. (I can't remember all of the specifics... sorry)

The wiper thing happened on my eta. ended up tightening the nut on the wiper arm and they work fine except in intermittent mode, they like to stop in random places. The things the wiper arms pivot on can get stripped and then they do what you described or they jump around or stop randomly and/or run each other over. I just don't use the intermittent setting, if I do I have to park them manually (use the stalk to make them stop at the bottom of the windshield)
                Tach maybe bad gears

i'd almost bet money on a bad motor

                  the tach doesn't use gears..

when my SI board shit the inspection light came on, the red and yellow lights illuminated and stayed illuminated with the car off and the key out. Tach and economy gage stopped working, everything else worked fine.

                          sucks, buddy.

i paid like $3.4 million to have the wiper motor replaced on my 318is a few years ago. then like a month later, the timing chain snapped.
