    unplug the afm and crank?
have you tried flipping the little red switch? most likely it turns on and off the old escort radar detector.

Probably get more help if you post in the correct forum.

It has nothing to do with that switch. I would check the fuel pressure coming off the rail, then check the CPS. Above all, I would buy a Bentley and use it.

listen when you turn the key on to the start position. do you hear a whine(fuel pump) if not replace your fuel pump relay. also could be a shitty engine ground. check all of your ground wires on your engine block. you can swap your relays around, i cant remember if e30 are the same as e36 engines but you should be able to swap one of the three over to each other. incase you dont know which one is your fuel pump relay its next to your inake and it has a green and purple wire going to it.

That switch is probably for that hidden radar detector system.

Was the check engine light on before it died, or was it idling really rough before?

does it have spark? does the fuel pump run?

more than likely main relay or OBC immobilizer

just remember all you need to start a car is fuel, spark, compression and timing. so just narrow down from there.

easiest to check is spark then compression. if you have both go to fuel see if your fuel pump is functioning then, if it is check pressure and volume at the rail. if you have both check for signal at the injectors. and if all of it checks out go for timing.
