not sure if what i said was misunderstood, but i meant you can do a big motor in a sports car and do work, but there are also cars that do work without big motors. it comes down to how you set it up. the lotus weighs much less and has a smaller motor but still performance great, the zr1 has a "big motor" and performs great as well.

A GTO is a muscle car, plain and simple. I'm not going to get into a semantics debate over what denotes a sports car and a muscle car, but show that picture to anyone who's ever changed their own oil, and they'll tell you it's a muscle car. BIG difference, at least IMO. Just a bad example, that's all.

Fair enough, I believe it comes down to opinion anyway. In my own opinion, a muscle car is a sports car. However, in someone else's opinion it may not be.

GFD those are not truck motors. They weren't designed for a truck, they didn't come from a truck and they wouldn't be useful in a truck. A Corvette is not a truck.

A V8 with a 89.0/88.3 mm bore/stroke is not really a "truck" engine. Still, it's nearly "square" in comparison to the 4.4L M62s (92.0/82.7mm). BMW V8s have always been huge engines. A Vee configuration, coupled with DOHCs is just going to be big.

stock 5.3 hp and tq power curve

stock ls7 hp and tq curve...

the ls7 still makes more hp and tq from 2500rpm on, just sayin ;)

now the transmission and rear end are completely different stories... and obviously it would be a waste of money to put an ls7 into a truck but it would work.

alright, I'm sure that if BMW is going to put the motor from a "truck" in a "sports car", that they have done their research. Yes it may be a big engine, but it has been done before...with viper and I'm sure others.
so what should BMW do? keep with the V10, and up the displacement? NO. With the way things are going it would make it less efficient, and that is a bad thing. Just about every other car maker is going smaller with some sort of forced induction.
I'm sure the new M5/M6 will be a great car.

with all do respect the V8's used in the X series trucks were not designed specifically for the trucks, they are variants of the V8 from the 5 and 7 series

both great cars, but last i checked porsche, bmw, the zr1, the gtr, ferrari, lambo, acr viper etc do not set out to compete against those two cars.

they are NOT the sports cars that all other sports cars are compared to.
