Shell Oil Company, and how glad I am to be leaving Oregon.

Most of you know that in Oregon it is illegal to pump your own gasoline. Serious fines and whatnot if you get caught doing it. Pretty stupid... anyways.

I now have a serious grievance with Shell oil company.

On April 10th I stopped for gas around 7am. I was on my way to pick up ClavinZero at the airport. I got out of the car handed the gas station attendant my card, and told him $10/ of premium.

I then opened my trunk, and rearranged some junk so I would have room for his bags. I then heard I loud clunk, looked over and saw the guy putting the nozzle in the filler hole. Figured he just caught the neck on his way in. No big deal.

It was freaking cold outside, so I hopped back in the car and waited for my receipt. The guy came over to the window and tried to hand me my receipt, which is when I noticed how fucked up he was.

The guy was moving his hand all over the place (shaking) within a 6in diameter or so. Didn't know at the time but its now been established he is a 40+ yrs old, retarded, and has bad arthrtis. He cannot for his life hold his hands/arms still or steady.

Anyways I jet down to Eugene Airport and get out of the car, by now I've had 30miles to think about it, and decide to go check. Sure enough I walk around the car to the fuel door and there is a large chip just above the fuel door indent. He missed the filler neck by like 6 inches! The flecks were still mostly on the car, proof positive that this had just happened. Not only that but slight fuel spillage on the top of the rubber boot around the neck, and on he bumper. I has washed the car the night prior to this, then parked it. Chip wasn't there then.

Anyways I go in, pick up Clavin, and go home with him. After I drop him off I help him take his bags out then head back to the gas station.

I got there around 9am or so, maybe a tad later. Now the assistant manager is in. No one was there earlier that morning except our wonderful retard. The assistant manager looked at the damage, and helped me fill out a claim form. I left my name, number(s), email address, etc.

I came back monday and talked to the manager. He also looked at the car, and immediately tried to pull the "are you sure this didnt happen on the highway etc" card, to which I told him it happened here, performed by their retard Vernon.

I again left my contact info, and went home.

I stopped in several more times that week, looking for updates. The manager was consistantly "not in" and I told the gas monkeys there to leave messages.

Either they never left messages for the manager, or he just didn't feel like calling me back.

2 weeks go by, I get back from Texas.

I stop in Sunday, again only the assistant manager. He is completely worthless, and can't tell me a damned thing about any progress. I harass him briefly, tell him I will return at 10am tuesday morning (today) and his boss had better be here.

I stop in today, 10am on the dot. Manager is in his office. We go out to my car to talk.

I show him the chip again, and how its starting to gather surface rust. I have not touched it up because he specificly requested I not mess with it so their insurance company can take pictures. He never called in 2 weeks to setup a time to do that...

Anyways after some discussion he tells me that their insurance company has decided they are not liable for the damages, because Vernon (the retard) claims he didn't do it, and that it must have happened elsewhere. Since I cannot prove he did it, they won't pay out.

I then made a scene in the parking lot with the manager, chewing him a new asshole, telling him what to go do with himself etc. Customers and employees alike gathered to observe.

I asked him is Vernon still worked there. I was told yes. I asked the manager if he was aware that Vernon was completely unable to hold his hands or arms steady. He smirked and was definately aware... I told him I would return with a video camera to film Vernon trying to pump gas, and forward it to their insurance company.

He tells me there is nothing else he can/will do and if I care to persue it further I will need to call thier insurance company.

    I did.

I called their insurance company and told them what happened, explained the situation with the retard, and emailed her the pictures I had taken. She said she would get back to me later this week. We shall see.

Anyways I took my car back to the shop that did the original paint work, and got a quote for the repairs that need to be done. $325 is the total. I expect nothing less out of Shell Oil Company or their insurance company.

Long post I know, but now you may dispense your feedback.

That whole "attendant must pump gas" law in your state is a bunch crap. Gainful employment for the brain-fried I suppose

If I am getting gas with a freshly painted 2002, the guys at my local Shell station just hand me the pump after I explain that the paint is new, the car won't take gas on anything other than the lowest setting and the nozzle will most likely pop out during filling soaking their pants and shoes.

While a mostly functional human being is found from time to time, the vast majority of these gas pumpers are as you said.. brain fried. It's rarely the same people from week to week, the turn over rate is astonishing.

I asked about that. The manager said there were no cameras on the pumps, only the inside of the store. I asked to see the screens, and he was telling the truth.

go get em' dude. At least two-three times a year these fucktards put in the wrong gas. I come in and ask for supreme, and i came out and saw the regular nozle in it. Hmm... that's not going to work well on 11.3-1 compression pistons and i'm already mixing with race gas. I stop the pump, demand free gas, the rest be filled up with supreme FOR FREE, and a bottle of octaine boost, plus i note explaning that i asked for supreme, and was given regular, and that if the engine detonated or otherwise broke from using the wrong gas the station would be liable for a 15k engine. They were pissed as hell at me, but fuck em'. I've only been going to the same station weekly or more for the last 4 years. Apparently the manager had a HUGE ass kicking session with the attendents about listening to the customers and using the right type of fuel or THEY WILL BE FIRED. At least they get it right now. This is a huge problem in Oregon, both socially and economically. This is a job that should be reserved for HS kids who need part time employment, or college students (we've got 23,000 of them) who need employment while going to school. Instead, you have people who are blatantly lacking mental capacity to handle the task required of them. Also, they are older people, who are pissed off to be pumping gas, and don't really give a shit about anyone elses property. This also hurts gas prices, as stations have to charge enough additionally on the gas price to help cover the costs of these employee's. More minimun wage jobs, as the minimum wage continues to rise in oregon, increases the price accross the board of products at gas stations, cost of gas, and reduces the value of the dollar in this area. Thats my rant to go with your problem - my dad had the same thing happen to his old 380sl roadster, and they denied fault. I agree with and understand your frustration, good luck with the insurance company.

why is it illegal to pump your own gas in oregon? Last I checked it doesn't take a trained professional to push a button or two and squeeze a trigger

I love the gas station by my house. All the guys that work there are fucking funny ass arab guys who give the regulars free stuff and are compatent enough to not spill gas and give me the right kind. But I do agree, I have actaully left a gas station before when i saw who was about to pump gas into my dads alpha romeo.

That totallly sucks. I know how you feel. In 1982 I went to Zipper BMW in Westwood, Ca to get a part for my pristene 72Tii a lot boy insisted I let him park my car (already parked) I said no, came out to find it had been keyed & the flakes were still there. I called the manager of the establishment out to see and explained what happened when I pulled on the lot. They insisted it happened elsewhere even though all the flakes were right there!

I was really happy years later when they went bankrupr right after rebuilding the entire facility! Seems Mr Zipper died & Mrs Zipper invested badly in the stock market!

Hope you get paid. I didn't.
