Yes....someone did. Waaaay back in the day (circa early 1990s), there was a short story in European Car mag on a guy who dropped an M20 into an '02. He was a figher jet test pilot by trade and tinkered with cars and whatnot as a hobby. I remember how methodical this guy was in every detail of the swap.....really, really clean. Sadly about a year or so later this guy was killed while testing a new jet for the millitary.

Several people have swapped in M20s in the past few years. It really isn't a mysterious engine swap any longer. It doesn't quite drop in with the same relative ease that an M50 does into an E30, but it can certainly be done. There is even a guy who now fabricates motor mounts for the swap.
mchenry wrote an entire writeup on the m20 swap in some magazine back in the day and if you search I recall reading the entire article on the internet.
My dad tried a hot 2.6 M20 in his '02, but he dropped in the S14 when it came out in '88. He said the M20 was faster on the street but the S14 was more potent on the track.
