What makes a car pop and gargle?

I suppose it depends on the nature of the sound. Popping on decel is due to a lean mixture..

nope. You actually want to lean it out on decel - watch your econogauge sometime. When it goes fully to the left, the injectors are totally off.

Mine never gargles at idle, Only down shifts with pedal play. As long as this doesn't hurt anything I'm not going to try to make it stop.

it might not be hurting anything, but it could be a sign that your car needs a tune up.

My 325is has been gargle heavy lately. Stockish m20 with stock exhaust no muffler. During downshifts my car gargles and pops. Sounds very cool but wondering what casues it. My other m20 never did this. Also found two big holes in my intake boot which will be fixed asap.

With no exhaust and aggressive cams, my m42 overfires and pops all the time :D

My turbo car does it because it runs lean on overrun. Running rich would make more sense as a cause, but that has not been my experience.

Mine does neither really. It does make a loud pop noise when I r3vmatch when I downshift, not as loud as say a backfire but it makes a nice pop.

SRT-4's can go to hell with their super annoying exhausts.

SRT-4's exhaust make many people happy when they hear them. only http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/imag...s/naziskie.gif dont like them. lol jk
