However even in theory it is not as efficient as a turbocharger.

Mazda themselves uses essentially the same engine in their mazdaspeed 3 but just using turbocharging.

I think over the years mazda has made some money putting stuff out there that apeals to engine nerds. No offense to anyone.

What is sold in the US is hamstrung by big oil and detroit so it doesnt eliminate us from buying crappy cars that guzzle gas.

But whats most amazing about skyactive d is that its a diesel that gets over 55 mpg.

The way they alway kept diesels at bay from taking over the entire car market is to make the engine itself a couple generations behind the gas engines of the day.

To make a long story short, the skyactiv diesel is state of the art on par with the top level gas engines. all things being equal a diesel goes 30% farther per gallon, much farther than that in city driving.

I fail to see any link between the MS3 Direct injection turbo 4, and the Mazda Millennia Miller cycle. Does the MS3 engine keep the intake valve open for part of the compression stroke? I've been studying up on this now so I really am curious.

Trust me, I am interested in different designs, but would rather put my money into proven designs that won't break. The new 370z has an amazing variable valve lift system, but I wouldn't buy one just yet. Partly due to the fact that when I was in school for that engine, we were told about the cost of removing the VVEL Control unit from the head. Each time, it must be replaced, with a cost of >$1,000.

"Different" engine designs are great, but they don't tell you the cost to repair these engines when you purchase one.

I wish the Wankel had been invented first and was to the point of perfection that it's piston driven counterpart is now. So simple, so elegant, but dem apex seals.....damn them. I <3 Wankels....

          Great minds...

I have seriously tossed the idea around of doing a b13 swap into the E30. There's a turbo one with trans on ebay right now for $1200.

Only problem would be the fat stiffy I'd get every time I started it up.

And then the smoke you blow from blown seals. Or from running 10:1 AFR because you're too scared to lean it out further.

my dream car is a b13 too

              in a toyota previa.

Toyota previa is one car that is almost impossible to engine swap. It has a cool very reliable engine of its own but its seperated into an engine and then a drive shaft that runs all the accessories.

Theres no room for any engine swap in its bay except for a rotary.

And believe me those things handle better than you think... it would be a pimp ride. RWD.

as far as the mazda millenia, its the bassis for the 2.3 they have used since. Updated with different stuff its the same performance motor. But believe me Im not going to get motor nerd with you someone else will do that bromance.

I remember when I went to auto mechanics there was a chapter on wankel, super charging and miller cycle, even in the 80s 90s, its all really old tech the auto industry shelved as not maximizing profits.

But Mazda likes to throw some stuff out there that a motor nerd would like, even though that must be a small minority of the end buyers.

A friend of mine has "reinvented the wankel" actually, on paper it has potential to make 1000hp from 1000ccm without boost.

pretty sure there's a previa that was swapped with an F1 motor.

There's not a good reason for it.

Edit: Meant to reply to the "4 wheel steering" comment.

YES! The first car I ever drove on a semi-regular basis was my parents '91 Previa. Think about it:

Supercharged + mid engined + rear wheel drive = Ferrari of minivans
