i can do a work weeks worth of commuting on one tank of gas in my 325ix. and i drive 60 miles a day. weekend is extra. that said, my 325es (RIP ;_; ) got 30mpg and i only had to fill up once a week, including the weekend.
i'd rather have a 325es over a 318is.
the new focus is surprisingly fun to drive. very much like the 325es in that it feels quite peppy and powerful during normal driving, but once you step on it, it falls on its face cause that's all it had.AWD > RWD

Had an 03 ZX5 I was going to do the suspension swap on. had a hard time choosing between keeping the ZX5 and the e30 when I moved. The Zx5 was 5 speed and fully loaded with nice paint and heated seats and leather. The SVT swap would have done wonders for the little car(as I test drove a SVT focus and it EASILY out handled my stock e30), not to mention the added fuel savings and the fact that it's NEWER than the e30.
Came down to which one I enjoyed most, regardless of age.

1 thing i forgot to mention...
the auto, even though it has a 4.10 (like most auto e30s) does pretty well on the highway because the transmission has different gearing. in Sport mode, it revs pretty high at speed. but in Drive (using overdrive) i only see 3300ish rpm at 80mph. that's about 500rpm lower than a manual e30 with a 3.73.
i havent started tracking my mpg, but because its turning lower rpm at highway speed i'd say the auto does better than the manual.AWD > RWD

FWIW I averaged 25-26 on the freeway and 21 overall with my stock automatic.
