Does Growing up = abandoning the oldskool?

Hi. I'm a car guy. I repect all brands and their contributions to automotive history. I have my favorites, but I favor
older cars in general. The newest car I've owned was my Highschool graduation car which was a 96' VW Jetta
(I graduated 2002). Ironically, at the time of purchase, I actually wanted MkII Jetta or Golf (years 1985-92'). But my
Dad was buying, and said that was too old (witch pissed me off becuz the car I was driving coming outta highschool
was an 87' Saab 900 and it was super reliable). So now there is a delima...Im Not a kid anymore I'm a father and a
husband, therefore I want to do what's best for my family. I perfer older cars because from my personal experience, they
are easy to work on, and I don't have a problem finding parts for em at the junk yard if needed. My wife and almost
other adult in my family, have a prejudice against buying anything over ten years old and/or with more than
120k miles on it. My uncle thinks like I do. He buys an older car in decent condition for about 3k cash, drives it for 4
or 5 years and gets something else. I currently have a 93' Camry and 92' Tercel. My wife drives the Camry because her
2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee died. The Camry and Tercel can out live that newer car three times over without and engine
overhaul! I don't get why people are so brainwashed into thinking that older cars are junk. My wife complains that the a/c
doesn't work (300 bucks to fix it btw) and that it has manual locks and windows. Her Jeep had all those luxuries, but what
good are they now that the engine is overheating, the radator is screwed, and the tranny is contaminated with antifreeze!
I will get her the newest car that we can afford cash, or held her make payments on a newer one, but as for myself, I am
    sticking with the old school.

I don't see myself buying anything newer than 2000 anytime soon, except for an s2k, but that will be a ways down the road. I see nothing wrong with it as long as you keep it in good running shape.

Personally I would have a new car for the wife and kids, simple because of the high level of safty new cars have to there previous models and only that reason. Wife and kids are precious cargo and you want them to be safe at all costs. Then I would have something oldschool for my self.

I've been into E30's since I could drive. When I graduated from college as a present to myself I said I would buy a "new" car. It was either the E39 or E36 M3 sedan. I'm also a father so I needed a full sized sedan. No way am i buying a mini suv or van. I ended up buying a 98 528i Sport with 5 speed because it was less than 10K and was in excellent condition. It's a good full sized sedan that looks nice and that was good enough for me. I didn't need another fast car. Just a good stock modern cruiser that I could put regular gas in and take anywhere. AC is COLD, airbags all over, good stock sound system and just a solid car. I still have my E30's though. =]

If it had to boil down to 1 single car, then you have to choose the one that makes the most sense. Doesn't have to be new but newer will do just fine. E36 M3 sedan is an awesome buy right now. I opted for the extra space and comfort of the E39 but the E36 was right there. If I could only have 1 car then I'd probably own an E39 M5 right now.

I like older cars but newer cars are going to be better. They may not be built as well or even designed better but the engineering that goes into them is generally better. Old school is relative. The first E36's are about to be 20 years old!

You can get plenty of old cars in good shape that will have working AC, power windows and power locks.

E30's are actually quite safe. I can't find the thread, but they are on par with a lot of cars today even.

e30 are not safe compared to any new car; get real...

as a fellow husband/father, do yourself a favor buy a family vehicle and a cheap e30 as a project.

Side impact airbags are a very good thing to have.

I would rather have my kid driving an E30 than a ford focus. They handle much better and I think the bmw would fair better in an accident!
The difference between porcupines and BMWs is that porcupines have the pricks on the outside!

E39 M5's make good family cars.
