One more thing here... race laps are generally flying laps that include the back straight. Laps done by civilians are (as shown in the video) typically timed from the start at the end of the back straight to the beginning of the back straight.

So in effect, there's your discrepancy between the DTM cars and the stock M20 car. But is the Cayman time a flying lap or does it include the back straight?
    paint sucks

theres a guy on here that put some HUGE tires on his e30 for a track day, said he was running the fastest laps of the day and newer bimmers and tuned cars couldn't keep up to him in corners.

more grip makes a huge difference. thats my next mod. i have a low car, shock tower/strut bars, under suspension bar and other stuff, and yeah it definately gives fair warning before it lets go, so some 225/15's should keep me planted.

but OP. swap in a 2jz motor, coilovers like GC with koni shocks, full race cage and stripped interior, with soem 245/16 sumemr tires and damn you will fly.

the time of the cayman is the record lap time done by proffesional factory driver ... i think that all record's are flying lap times at the nurburgring... in that video the guy has the engine stock and everything else like suspension and tires its moded... i was thinking about a preped 280 whp engine and some nice suspension setup and the cayman is eating dust... power to weight ratio wins...:D

How long does it generally take a car going that fast to cover the back straight? If the Caymen didn't do the back straigt then the two times would probably be pretty similar if the M3 didn't do the back straight. Still, that is race car vs, stock car.

i cannot agree with the statement that the e30 is a race car... stock engine and some aftermarket tires and brakes ... don't make it a race car ... race cars go on full slicks and have some engine work done plus plus plus... anyway take into consideration the lap of the cayman is done by one driver and most of the e30 videos out there are with 2 people in the car ... that some extra weight there ...

I don't have a budget. I'm not planning on going out and dropping 5k on the car based on what people tell me in this thread. It gives me a good idea what path to take as I upgrade in the future.

The one I posted is of a DTM Group A car. I think it is a race car.

yeah that is a race car ... but we ended up comparing videos from last year maybe 2 years ago... not so long ago... i don't know why the times back then where so poor ... maybe treack was longer , different configuration, have no idea... sorry i was thinking about the stock engine e30 in the video....i think with some decent money invested in the handling department of the car you can have a better handling car with less weight and some nice brakes and some rubber ... maybe something under the hood to mach to power to weight ratio and then take both cars to the track and test them ...:D

you can't really compare the e30 to a modern day sports car like that. it's just not a fair comparison. in my mind a more fair comparison would be an e46 m or a euro spec e36 m.

I would agree with that. Really the only thing the E30 has going for it is the weight factor.
