and for the guibo bolts i dont see why a breaker bar on one side with the double-wrench technique on the other side wouldnt work after theyve been soaked in pb or something similar for awhile.

Sorry if my answers seem arrogant, I am just suprised to see people using measurement devices for breaking bolts, WD-40 as a rust penetrant, and others stating that the chinese can't make an impact??? Just caught me a little off guard. I would expect that type of advice on a tuner or car audio site? I may have overestimated the communities knowledge. I appologize if I offended anyone.

I am just trying to show you a better solution, feel free to spray everything down with that crap...What it is good for is drying a points type distributor if you ever have an ignition miss from a cracked dist. cap. since that is what it was originally designed for... WD stands for water displacement

i suppose i indeed did say that. but i do not mean to say it breaks free rust. rather that it assists in the lubrication around it to help u break free rusted parts. that when dry and unlubricated would be much more difficult to remove. note that that response was also a reply to ur arrogant post before.
hmm it appears wd40 is pretty useless vs those other options :dot:Last edited by tonywonder; 07-10-2011, 12:40 PM.

Seriously here, I've got air impacts and a mac-daddy SnapOn cordless 18v 1/2" drive impact and I never use them on guibo bolts. If you can't fit a socket and breaker bar/cheater pipe on there, then use a box end wrench with another one on the open end side to make it longer- LEVERAGE will get it loose.
Save your $$$$- don't buy the HF cordless impact because it IS crap. If you must buy something from HF for this job, buy an 18" or 24" 1/2" drive breaker bar.Originally posted by skirkpat View Post1) Harbor freight tools are usually good enough for the ocasional wrench (excluding hand tools, but if you are buying harbor freight wrenches/sockets, you should not be working on a BMW or any car for that matter)
2) Check CL, there is ALWAYS a deal on used impacts.
3) WD-40 is a water displacement spray, NOT a lubricant or rust inhibitor, or remover. if you are using WD-40 to loosen bolts or lubricate parts you need to learn about what the WD is really for.
4)PB blaster is alright, Aero Kroil is better, but the best out there to soak a rusted bolt is a 50/50 mixture of Acetone and Transmission fluid.
5) Never use a torque wrench to break a bolt loose...if you do NEVER admit it..It makes you sound as stupid as eating a turd sandwich.
6) never use 12 point sockets or open end wrenches on a stubborn fastener.
**and to the guy saying an impact won't get off a nut or bolt that a wrench can't.... LOL, are you serious??? you sound like the guy with the torque wrench story***Originally posted by skirkpat View PostDid you read the first 2 statements ??? I answered the OP questions
My knowledge comes from 20 years of experience 13 of which on the Engineering team in the Launch and Design Dept. for Ford Motor company (I was one of around 150 people that brought the world the first Hybrid SUV) I also spent 7 years as a journeyman machinist/tool and die maker making progressive punch dies...your knowledge is so limited I wont even waste the time to mock you. Just trust me when I say I will forget more about this subject than you will ever know. As far as your comment on my post my post count goes...Are you serious??? LOLGo put some muffler tips on your car or something.
Dude, you sound like a complete douchnozzle, yet somehow I imagine you're not- in person.
I believe you're referring to my statement above that "an impact isn't going to get that shit off any better than a good wrench/socket and some leverage." I stand by that statement in this case- an impact is hard to get up in there on those fasteners- I've ALWAYS been able to get them loose with box end wrenches and/or a 1/2" drive socket and a breaker bar. I'm usually working with the car on jackstands, NOT a lift, so I know how there's not much space under there- but it will work.
HF has some really shitty tools, some barely useable tools and some that are pretty damn good. Some of their combo wrenches are actually as good or better than many of the name brand stuff, and almost as good as the tool-truck stuff (Snap On, etc). If the OP is as broke as he says he is, I say he should save his money and NOT buy any impact- just get creative and use some damn leverage and the shit will come loose.
Trust me, not too many people are impressed when you come around here and say "I've got engineering experience and car manufacturing experience", etc, etc. Just prove your worth by not being a dick and you'll be OK by me. You may have more experience working on FORDs, but I guarantee I've worked on more E30's than you ever will see in your lifetime.

Did you get your guibo off yet?
As far as cordless impact advice, Ive never used a HF power tool, and dont intend to either. I have all Makita electric stuff and it works ok, when im working flat rate i need speed, but working on your own car? guibo nuts/bolts should be no problem to crack free with two combo wrenches. try and find some nice long box wrenches or double up two wrenches like everyone has said already. lay under the wrench and benchpress the thing, dont be a wuss.
