i would go with the e30. I think it'll be easier to fix and more aftermarket support and used parts available when stuff breaks..also like stated before the e30's are going up in value + it looks better to me and you'll get better gas mileage w/ the 4cyl which = more driving time in the mountains ;)

have you considered a Miata as well, you can probably find a decent one in you price bracket. I've driven my friends miata w/ just i/e/h and some gc coilovers and man that little thing was a blast...

best of luck, both are good choices..i'd pick a miata personally if i was to get another little project, but thats just me..

I took my newly acquired 318is around some fun pa back roads, I never thought I would enjoy the 4 like I do the 6 cylinder cars but man it was soo much fun and I love how nimble and light it feels
