I'd say they are probably equals reliability wise. The Toyota's going to feel bigger and heavier hauling ass on the back roads particularly in the braking department, but will also be torquier and more fun to drive around town. I think an AE86 would be a better comparison to the 318is driving experience.

Ill have to agree with keedler about the build quality. The japanese cars are just not on the same level in stock form. Right out of the box, the brakes, and steering, not to mention interior- just the overall quality.. The e30 is superior.
Yes this is an e30 site, and you'll get biased answers.. But Ive driven/owned s12 nissans/older supras of the time.. Everything has to be updated to be on the same level as the german car, so at the end of the day you might as well just bought the german car....-Jay

I would say go the IS. I have not driven a supra before but I have a 318is and love it.
Probably my most relivant experiance with mine was about 1 year ago. I bought some Dunlop Star Specs in 205/55/16 for my car as the old tyres had many a problems. Anyways I live in the hills and was driving a long a twistie road I know reasonably well and came up behine a 2006 WRX STI with a privisonal license driver (yourng kid) Anyways ill say that my car was right behind him though the twisties no problems at all.
This is also with stock suspension that probably has not been touched in 10 years. Now this kid was porbably not a great drive but the fact that I could keep up no problems was very impressive in my book.
Hope that story answers your question.sigpic

They're extremely light and nimble but unless you get a GTS(US Term), with the 4AGE and LSD, they're absolute garbage.
I own one, with 8kg/mm coilovers in the front, 6kg/mm adjustable spring perch & good shocks in the rear, 14x8 -12 offset on the front and 14x8.5 -7 on the rear. While it drives and handles amazingly trough the hills, I'm much quicker in my stock E30 320i. Having headlights that actually work decently makes a world of difference.
Slatered, please don't attribute the popularity of an AE86 to Initial D.
They're an amazing handling car and truly feel like a go kart. They have been proven on track again, and again. In Group A, N2, Hill Climbs, Rallies, drifting etc. To most of us, they were awesome long before that manga/anime come out.

As I mentioned before I'm on the toyota forum also and they're saying both, but with the majority of them saying e30. so it may not be bias on here, it just might be because it's an all around better car as mentioned above by someone previously. This is exactly what I wanted to happen, an opposite party going with the opposite car. I've done this many times with other cars that I've bought and it has always worked out and have never regreted getting a car using this method for getting 1st hand info.
I wouldn't rule out an MA61 though. 5MGE are a dope engine. 2.8litre, DOHC, I6 out the box. Possibly a little restricted from factory but wouldn't need much more than intake, headers and exhaust to kick ass. They are 1,350kg from factory but at least 50-100kg could be removed with relative ease without compromising in-cabin comfort. W58 5speeds will hold up to around 400HP, the G series diff would take a fair bit more than that.
So, there's nothing really wrong with an MA61 at all. Not worse than an E30, even though that's what I'd rather.
