Why are these odometer gears so expensive?!

Because the guy that sells to them spent a lot of money on the molds/machinery to produce these specifically for this application so the price is high to cover the cost of the tooling, etc. However, there are alternatives that exist and work flawlessly.

I don't disagree with you on the price of the gears being a little steep. I need to do my odo as well, it just died. Also my 911 trip odo just bit it.

It's still cheap...compared to a new cluster... but if $25 is a huge then just deal with a non working cluster?

I'm sorry but $25 is not cheap for a small plastic gear no matter how you try to justify it, and that's just for one of them. The price it's self isn't a huge deal I just have a hard time wrapping my head around the price for what you're getting and for that yes I'd rather have a non-working odometer.

Actually, I'm with Jean. Quit whining about it. If you think its too expensive make your own since its "part of your job"

Make it for less and market it to the E30 people... you'll see that you'll get barely any commercial business from here because everyone here is a fucking penny pincher... yes I'm generalizing, but there are only a select few here that are willing to pay.

Whoa there, you seemed to have pulled what I said completely out of context. I never said making gears was part of my job. I work in the BMX industry, the company I work for deals directly with our manufactures of all the components so I understand the costs of tooling and the actual manufacturing of the product is what I meant. I'm not trying to start a bickering thread here, I was just surprised of the cost. If there's cheaper alternatives I'll go that route...or I'll suck it up and pay or not have a working odometer.

Nah, I guess it read wrong, I knew what you meant... I figured that if this is sorta thing you dabble with at work, you could make it happen. I wasn't necessarily targeting the production of gears themselves.

In any case... you gotta pay to play with older cars like this. The support is just not there.

Having said that, I've been working on something with a buddy of mine that could solve the hole "gears" issue. But that's still in the works.

Odometergears.com is the only place that sells quality gears. And the only place that sells the full set of Motometer gears to boot. I think his $85 price tag is justifiable seeing that he's the ONLY one making these for us in the market.

You can get a $15 set of VDO gears off some guy on these forums if you want to give that a shot. However VDO and Motometer gears do not interchange.

Very small market for these and he provides them for all cars. If he sold them for cheap he wouldn't make enough money to justify selling them and then you wouldn't be able to get them anywhere.

                                same reason a oem o2 sensor is 140.00 and a 1990 5.0 mustang sensor is 40.00.
