Jim its like Rythmic Gymnastics. Its not really a sport just a show that looks like a sport. Its more to entertain crowds than to compete, you have to grade it subjectively.

Plus Im sure as a track guy youd find it confusing because they call powersliding "drifting." Usually drifting is a 4 wheel slide.
    Im now E30less.

Exactly. It's all about the tricks. It shouldn't be compared to racing. It's something else to do with cars.

Well, I Drift, as well as do AutoX, driver schools, and varius other "grip" activities. Each has it's own challenge. Theres more to drifting than just mashing on the gas at the APEX (i'd be surprised if a stock e30 actually got sideways like that), you have to work the car with weight transfers and throtle inputs. Its a sport of balance, as is road racing and autoX, except in drifting one has to drive just a tad bit over the limit, rather than on the "edge."

now i dont do it super hardcore

but i rarely pass up an attempt to get the car sideways if the roads are empty.

i think theres a lot of guys here who have the same mentality.

Okay, I get it, and thanks for not completely flaming me, which I expected.

I've always kinda wondered how an e30 would fare in such an activity, as they certainly don't have the power to maintain throttle on oversteer. (well at least mine doesn't  ) I know how to slide my car on the rear wheels (lift), on the front wheels (press), or on both wheels (hit the corner just right, and hang on  ) but those are all transitional things that are done with minor inputs on the throttle and steering wheel.

Maybe I should check out one of these drifting events; as long as people are having fun with their cars in a safe maner, all is good. Heck, I used to have some fun with my old 510's letting the tail hang out, but when I think about it now, I'm probably lucky to be alive!

              Enjoy,
              Jim

You don't need power when the guys drift on junkyard tires on bottlecaps (yes, literally).

Even if they were brand new, they are geneally still "junkyard" tires 8)

There's got to be a reason why pro drifters use top of the line tires, and I doubt it has to do with sponsorships. People use cheap ass tires just because they lose traction easier.

people use cheap ass tires because they cant afford to keep the car going, much less beating the hell out of it everyday. sure there is a reason. but most "top" drifters are 80-120 mph+ most guys on here get the ass out when its raining join a drift "team" and think they are drifting. as a series to be followed yea its neat, and yes its fun to learn the limits of yourself, and your car especially sideways. i do not consider some kid going 30-50mph and breaking the rear end loose out of sheer stupid luck a drift. then again im a dumbass so what does any of this matter. do what you want. just make sure you get good video if/when you eat the wall, cliff, bystander, parked car, curb etc. backroad blasting is where its at. not particularly safer, just i personally have more fun with it.

in regard to the original question. i have slid both the e30 as well as my DD S13 240sx and numerous other cars. the s13 was much more predictable.

drifting is fun, but most of the e30 people you will find are more "grip" type drivers :D

s13's are way more predictable. Youre right, making them easier to drift. Friend of mine has had over 9 240sx's and has slide all off them. With diffrent mods. He just bought a levin and he does ok. 240sx to me is a car that takes very little skill to drift. It just wants to slide. Ive seen many 240 drives slide like crazy and get in a e30 or any bmw and be like damn this is harder 2 slide than my car. Usally after a while they figure it out. Most of my friends that drive 240's complement the e30's lock to lock.

and heres some quick pics of this past drift event last weekend @ ocala grand prix. 3rd gear 60 mph +...

pro drift cars are also boosted all to hell, and can actually break traction on nice top of the line tires...also, they are sponsored by those tire companys, and as a sponsor the point is to make ppl buy yer product after seeing it in action, and as a tire company, wouldnt u want ppl to buy the top of the line tires which cost more $$? its all about the $$$$....
