Bump for aircooled Flat 4 in the trunk!

    But what's it gonna get?
Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

If we're throwing out retarded suggestions...how about a turbocharged opposed piston engine.

Oh well if we're throwing out retarded suggestions, then I say throw a hyabusa motor in there and call it a day.

Im seeing the rear wheels turning, the engine staying in the same spot and the body crumpling with the driver sandwiched between the dash and the trunk.

Before you go hacking stuff up, you might want to see what the value of the car is. I know for a fact that you will destroy all value in the car if you stick something else under the hood. You are better off selling it as is. You swap the motor, and you will be stuck with it until you drag it to the junk yard because no one wants to buy it. There is really no reason to kill the car.

^agreed. But this car has sentimental value to its owner (originally belonged to his grandfather) but funds are scarce to rebuild it with original fiat stuff. Thats why he was considering a solid BMW motor just to get it on the road.

My guess is that the motor is stone simple, and unless something is REALLY wrong it won't be that big of a deal to rebuild. That car is what; a '58 or so? Good luck getting any motor newer into that without spending big $$$ to make it work. I bet you can get most of the parts reasonably easily. Try International Autoparts. They do Fiat stuff. I know where to get Alfa Romeo stuff, but Fiat I'm not familiar with even though Alfa is (and has been for a long time) owned by Fiat, but then, so is Ferrari.

I'd guess that if the motor is just tired, $1500 would get you the parts and machine work. Assembly should be really easy.

I drove a 1200 once - two Haqmpsters in a cage would have more power and torque. A 124 engine might be shoehorned in, but not much more.

Hey, I never said stock would be fast. :) Heck, my remaining Alfa only had a 1300 in it. That said, you might be able to go to a Fiat Dealer and get the parts, or at least have a shot at getting them. Might be worth a try.
