I agree with your posts but thought I was responding to bastionshaw. I guess I assumed he realized there was a trade-off as it doesn't look like he actually asked that question.

91 octane for my M42, not sure it needs it, but cars are unlike women, you treat them with love and they show it back. Women on the other hand need to be neglected if you want anything from em.

As for oil I used some 10w40 Quaker I had on hand since I was broke, but next week I'm going to try BAVauto's Liqui Moly 5w40 Synth.

Anyone have any experience/knowledge with this oil?

I have a few brochures on the new Liqui Moly oils, didn't really look through them but the sales reps were pretty insistent it exceeds BMW's LL-01 rating. Sounds like a decent product but I have no issues with the TOTAL I'm using right now, and the LM is more expensive. I'd say give it a shot.

I bet at that price it's a group III, though. can't know much about it without reading the data sheets.

i never said there was a HP performance gains.
i know for a FACT my cars ran better on 91+ when it was stock.
my reference is relevant as it doesn't matter what timing your car can advance itself to.
tell you what open up 2 identical engine one that only ran low octane and one running higher, tell me how they look after a few years...
and Ive had quite a few E30s and in my experience you run shit you get shit results ;)
              but to each his own.

for someone chastising me for believing BMW recommendations you sure are eating up big oil's "premium" label :|

Why do you think that 87 is "shit" compared to 91?
Octane doesn't indicate quality of the fuel. Mix 87 with alcohol and you'll raise the octane rating...but you aren't making a higher quality fuel by doing that. All octane does is tell you how slow the fuel burns. If your electronics can't take advantage of it, why do you think your car is running better?

Mobile 1 full synthetic 15w50 in the winter (southern AZ). Currently stock M20 therefore I run 87. I get avg of 25 mpg highway.

Wrong. Normally wouldn't point this out, but you seem kind of nit picky on things and very detailed.

Oil wise, I use Rotella standard 15-40, and have had GREAT results. Less lifter tick when dead cold, smoother cold idle, etc. Seems to have cleaned up the engine better.

Octane wise, I typically run 93, even no chip anymore. Seems to run happier up in the redline with the 93 vs 87. I have ran both an beat the car on both, and have been contemplating this for years driving this e30.

Conclusion: Rotella is great for my old BMW engines, no matter if high rpm, or low revs. Octane is your choice, but on my m42 car, I can honestly tell the diffference 6000rpms+.

                              1984 323i.

                              Oil: Castrol GTX 20W50.

Fuel: BP Ultimate - 98RON. If no BP is around, I'll get Caltex Vortex 98RON. I don't trust any other fuel stations, such as Liberty, United etc.

                                Motor: m42 w/MarkD chip
                                Octane: Sunoco 93
Oil: 15-40 rotella diesel oil or any 15-40 diesel that is on sale

I'm thinking about changing to a different viscosity for the winter (avg temp is around 36 degree) in the m42 but not quite sure what to yet. Anyone have any recommendation?
