Hood came unlatched on highway

Really? But what about once the hood starts to open up to much? Once it gets to that point wouldnt it shut agian since all of the air is hitting the flat surface of the hood?

it would. in the case of an e30, that is why it has those catches at the back of the engine compartment. ram air from driving down the road/highway pushes the keepers at the trailing edge of the hood into those catches so it won't flop up and down in the breeze.

if those keepers weren't there the back edge of the hood would lift up to a certain point and then the lift produced by the design of the hood would be overcome by the physics principle you mention.

depending on your speed, the hood might simply stay elevated a few inches above the engine compartment or it my bang up and down at a really fast rate. alternating between lifting and stalling.

Actually I had a car once, an Olds Calais ugh, that had a really messed up hood latch and the only way to open it was to drive towrds the house around 35mph and yank the latch then screeeth to a halt before it lifted all the way up haha

In H.S. I had a 1970 442 with a fiberglass hood, well after getting high and checking the oil/water, I forgot the hoodpins-- man was that an expensive high!

Was hoping he would chime in. But back when we were in hs he was into 300z's. That car was just bad news. We were having a joy ride after he had done something to the car and he must have not bolted the hood on. Found out 300z hoods can fly for a few feet before flipping up into the air.

LOL! That was good times! Thought the hood was going to come back and decapitate us for a second! It slid down about a foot (towards the front of the car) then caught the air (about 35 mph) and flipped about 3 times in mid air, before crashing down, shiny side down, in the middle of the road. Pretty epic sight to see in your rear view mirror!

That car went to the yard for $125 a while later.

Its not the best replacement but at least this one isnt dented even like the old one was before it hit my window. It really only needs to be repainted.

Don't worry I did a few years ago on a buddies race car that I had been repairing and instead of leaving the pins on the lanyards they had been inside the interior. I set off down rt 20 east toward wally world for a temperature check in a replacement radiator. Looked down noticed the pins and did an oh turd at about 60, needless to say I tapped the brakes and the downward bit changed the high pressure and flip up it went onto the roof. Didn't bother to stop drove back to the house dukes of hazzard style with a snarl of anger. Pissed me off as I had told him to keep the pins on the lanyards to prevent that.

Do it once and don't forget about.

Its a 318ti. I forgot we're all thinking e30 here. At least on an e30 its super obvious is the hood has been left popped open. Also I can't drive to the junkyard without a hood because its too far away and its snowing.

I drove my dodge Dakota from Chicago to LaCrosse, WI without a hood...in the rain. No problems. You get a lot of weird looks but you'll be fine. All the wire connections are weather proof...

It happend to my e36 after i picked it up from the body shop they forgot to close the hood all the way, and as soon as I went on the on ramp and hit 60 mph hood flew up and cracked my windshield. I couldnt see anything since hood was covering my view. luckily I was able to pull safely to the shoulder :)
