Failed smog.. How bad?

    Fix the intake boot first. That is an obvious vacuum leak and will cause those numbers. A failed o2 sensor, platinum plugs where they don't belong, clogged/bad cat (probably not your problem with those numbers), coolant system not functioning properly, and a bad coolant temp sensor can also cause those issues.

    High NOx is caused by high levels of oxygen, usually a vacuum leak, or from high combustion chamber temps.

    I learned a lot of that with my previous 2 e30's.

    Best bet is to fix the obvious problem, and if you have a Bentley manual start testing the other stuff before you bring it back in for a retest to find any other potential issues.

              yeah, same motor. it says in the owners manual to use premium with the M42 too.

                Simple brah. Fix your vaccum leaks, do the whole mess-under-intake while you're at it...
                and be cautious, your cats probably gotten thrashed too, might as well replace that while you're at it.
