so 20w40 would be perfect for my eta?
Anyone use Rotella T diesel oil in their gasoline e30?

VR1 is a slightly better choice than Rotella T, because of a bit more ZDDP. There is no advantage to using synthetic oil in an M20 engine since the oil change intervals need to remain at the factory specification. That interval needs to remain the same to prevent build up of combustion blowby condensates in the oil. I.E., you can't take advantage of the longer life of synthetic oil.
An even better oil in an M20 than either of those is Brad Penn 20w50. But it is much harder to find than VR1 or Rotella T. For more than you ever wanted to know about oil (or filters) wade through what is available at http://bobistheoilguy.com
mobil ones m20 test used 14k oil changes to reach 1 million miles. 15 50 w btw.
bmw recomends special oil for the m20 engine in severe usage.
Everyones car is different. I just went 7k with the m20 with full synthetic and it looks new, changed it anyway. Would be confident at 10k.
12k with synthetic in my nissan d21 truck the oil is black.
M20 engines dont have any more combustion gasses than ferrari engines unless they are worn. In truth they have less.
It was chosen to advertise the differences in synthetic oil.Last edited by stamar; 03-15-2012, 09:10 PM.Comment

So would it be bad to run the thinner oil in an m20? What about for an older (200k) m42 that I don't want to start leaking? is 10w40 okay, or use the thinner 5w40?The first car I ever rode in was an e30

I ran thinner oil in my m20, and it literally burned out at like a quart ever 1000 miles. lol. ruined the o2 sensor 10 30 is what i used maybe 10 40
you wont run that experiment too long. I think 15 40 is too thin for an m20.... because it is too thin except in the winter.
Just like the people in this thread, Id use it but not because its 15 40 just because its diesel oil. Id feel better about it in the winter.
for an m42 Im sure its fine to run thinner oil 10 40 is fine. or 10 30 or actually, 0 40 is the best synthetic for that one.
Im positive I would use synthetic if I owned a m42, and ran it at 7000 rpm. If you were limited to rotella you need their 5 40 synthetic.Last edited by stamar; 03-16-2012, 11:52 PM.Comment

i've used it. im not sure what difference i would notice, but i did go roughly 5k miles before changing my oil and its still running fine. then i found mobile 1 synthetic oil and filter for $30 at advance auto, so i used that for the oil change. i think the mobile 1 seems to be leaking out faster.sigpic

I'll be going to o'reilly's or walmart tomorrow to get a few gallons of oil. I'll be changing the oil in an m20 (128k) and m42 (193k). Since it doesn't look like rotella has 20w50, I guess 20w40 will be okay, or do you suggest anything else? It's warming up now, and its never really cold around here so too thick won't be an issue. Also, some fluid (not sure if it's motor oil) leaks quite a lot from this car, but there's no noticeable change on the dipstick.
For the m42, does rotella make 10w40? Or should i just use 5w40? I don't quite know the history of the engine, but it seems healthy and doesn't leak. The first car I ever rode in was an e30

Well it did not look new it was close to time to change it. It looked better on the dipstick than it did coming out which was kinda approaching black.... not overdue though could keep going some unknown amount of time maybe to 10k
definitely came out like water when heated with no sludge.
I dont know its totally apples and oranges , but same time period same oil, 12k full synthetic in a nissan d21 the oil was completely black and some sludge. past done.
I suppose I could send some to blackstone see how its going.Comment

without knowing whats in walmart I dont know. whats on sale etc.
If you want the zddp Id get the 15w 40 for the m20 and id get full synthetic 5 40 for the m42.....
for the one thats leaking, the thicker the better, and the cheaper too obviously. Its staying a bit fresher on its own.... so whats the cheapest 20 50 you can find?
oreilly has full synthetic on sale for 3.49 a quart right now id rather have that for the m42 I bet its cheaper 10 40.....Comment

You know im just going to make this short. I dont actually own a m42 or frequent the locals forum to hear what m42 people like but heres the long and short of it
bmw designed the m42 for fully synthetic oil. bmw recomends LL-01 or LL-98 approved oil.
In general that is only mobil 1 and castrol euro oil. Depending on how you drive it it is the type of motor that best for synthetic. I dont actually know if rotella synthetic even makes it im not that much of an oil nerd.
the best oil for the m42 is mobil 1 o 40. That is basically bmw oil..... comes from the factory in bmws. or bmw synthetic oil...
if you have a dino oil m42 I dont guarantee it wont release sludge that causes a leak. I cant tell from over a distance that specific a situation. I doubt it would though. and if I put my m42 in its high rpms a lot i would rather have synthetic and leaks personally.
the m20 might be the last motor where they didnt recomend fully synthetic oil... I dont have all the data in front of me. the m30 maybe.Last edited by stamar; 03-17-2012, 11:50 PM.Comment

FYI, the "W" in 20w50 (or whatever oil grade) does not stand for weight (as in viscosity), it stands for winter. The first number is the equivalent weight at 0ºF and the second number is the equivalent weight 210ºF. Hence the term, multi-grade oil; it's viscosity changes.Comment
