I just handed a turbo built civic on big fat hoosiers its ass at autox with my M50 swapped full-weight car on (mismatched) street tires and a mystery alignment on its silly struts and trailing arms. Also beat out some spec civics, most S2000s and an NSX. Obviously that doesn't indicate definitively that it is the superior car, but it goes to show that these cars can be pretty quick. However, if you are looking for laptimes over feel and fun, you may want to try for an E36 M3.

Hell naw. The E36 M3 is a good car but BMW fucked up on the styling. There is just something WRONG with the way those cars look. Black sheep of the 3 series, hands down.

I'll take my E30 S50 swap any day over an E36 M3. The E30 is gorgeous... the E36 reminds me of science fiction from the 50's where they try to imagine what the future would be like in 2000:

"Here is the BMW of the future! *E36 appears, boxy and fucking hideous like a $2 Iranian whore* We are replacing the E30 with this! Fuck yeah!"

Fuck laptimes. I want a classic, beautiful BMW that is raw, fun, and has lots of power and low weight. E30 it is. ;)

Welcome to E30. I'm very biased, but if you are looking for the most fun out of an E30 and plan on swapping, 1991 318is. Lightest, most agile, and with a swap will be supreme ruler of earth.
