whenever I get a new car, I like to run it all the way to empty
once to see how far you can go after the gauge says it's empty.
you don't have to do that. there's 2 gallons left in the tank when the reserve light comes on. so if you know your average fuel economy, you can tell how far you can go on that 2 gallons.

but, running it dry isn't going to kill the fuel pump. old wive's tale. maybe if your filter is shot and you have severe rust in your tank.

I always liked the idea of building up an eta, with modern electronics, and everything set up just right for maximum fuel economy. but I don't even have enough time to do everything I'd like to my only E30, it'll never happen with two. :p

I would love to get one of the diesel BMW's

I was considering going to an all diesel fleet - was looking at Mercedes of
the same era as the E30 - but I started looking at BMW's too, got enamored
with a really nice BMW 2002, but that wasn't to be... & I ended up with "Fritz"

Okay, I decided to go for it.
Traffic has been light, and I was in a laid back mood for the last 2 days,
so I have been driving to conserve fuel.

Don't know how long I can keep it up, maybe a few days.

I did get 322.7 miles on 12.38 gallons by driving until it started to sputter.
Probably could have got 5 more miles if I'd been willing to walk from there.
Will try it again when I get a can of gas to carry in the trunk. Maybe even on
              this hypermile tank full.

Not hypermiling, but with a couple of WOT runs included and a mix of 75% highway/25% city, I got 250~ miles out of 9 gallons of gas the other day. That's almost 28 mpg combined. Tire psi (hot) was 38, and I did my best to keep the MPG gauge at 40+ while on the highway (I don't have cruise control).

I need to keep testing this and see what it comes out to over several fill-ups, but it's SO hard not to goof off and drive the car like a jackass everyday.

I didn't know an RX8 ever felt fun in a straight line without an LSx swap. ;)
