Does it have to be 87 when imported or can you import a 88 and wait a year to register it?
You can import it to Canada (15-yr rule), store it for a year, then import it to the USA (25-yr rule). Problem is, you'd pay two sets of import duties.

OTOH, duties go by book value ... and the book value on these cars is very low. So, even if you had to pay double taxes, it's not a huge amount of money compared to the transport fees.

For example, I brought my E30 318is with me when I moved to Montreal from NYC in 2000. After 2 years, Customs Canada forced me to import the car. The book value of a '91 318is in 2002 was something like $5000, so the 6% import duty amounted to $400 or so. (Today, the book value is probably closer to $2K so you're talking about a couple of hundred bucks at most.) No big deal.

hahah, funny this came back up. Now if you are lucky, and you can find one of the first e30 tourings made (James Criv now has one that we found for him)- they aren't really that cheap though for a decent one and beggers can't be choosers when you are looking for a certin build MONTH.
And the cars here are just as rusty as the rustbelt cars in the U.S.-- West part of Germany seems to throw less salt and the cars there are a bit better.

so, if you find someone over here to take a train across germany to pick it up (took me a complete very long nerve racking day, and 100 euros for a train ticket and about 100 for gas to get it home)- in a 25 y/o car that I have never seen before.

then comes shipping and taxes. 10 years ago my friend paid 2500 dollars including bond and everything to be shipped from Bamberg Germany- North Carolina. I imagine it is around the same price to 3000 now.

Your lucky your in NJ- 4 years ago I shipped a car to Germany it was about 1500 dollars from the port in NJ to the port in Rotterdam. best is to find someone to lie about the sale price and you can save a few hundered there too.

^ good luck finding either of those in decent shape for under 4000 euros. I haven't seen a 323i even at a car show in over 6 or 7 years. and a 325i coupe would be cheaper to find a cali car and just put euro bumpers and valance on it.

It can all be done with a bit of patience, time, and luck, but I still don't think it is going to be cheap. Best would be to find a valuable car- an Alpina or Hartge, the value of those cars is atleast double in the states of what it is here.

It takes a lot of planning, time, great flexible people in Germany, and a decent amount of money.

The car that mike picked up for me still has rust issues, still has suspension issues, and I'm $3500 USD just into the car. I of course have no issues paying that, however if you are looking for a minty touring for under 5K imported you need to look elsewhere.

Do this only if you have a absolute love for the E30 or the touring, otherwise it may be wise to find something else.

Does the 25 year rule go by year? or by month + year?

I have an 88 touring just accross from Detroit, and would like to sell it come now/spring/summer... It's an 88 with a November build date.

                        Any input would be appreciated.
