front crumple looks pretty good for an 20+ year old design. (btw, the windshield did crack)

unfortunately, I don't think e30s had much side impact (or rollover) protection.

Time to save for an autopower 6 point roll cage.

Because every other on this board would do just as well in a crash test, Rust doesn't help in a crash;)

just because it retains it's structure, doesnt' mean you wanna be in it in an accident. If the impact isnt' being absorbed by the car, it's being absorbed by YOU!

I dunno about you, but if I can't walk or have serious injuries after an accident, regardless of how repairable the car is, I'm still FUCKED.

And no, the e30 isnt' a car that's good for accidents. It's very primitive and cannot hold a candle to cars of today in terms of crashworthiness. Sure you can fix it again, but who seriosuly wants to repair a car that has strutural damage.
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

i've been thinking about putting at least a roll bar in mine but I don't want to lose the back seat for my kiddos. any roll bars out there that offer some side protection while still allowing for rear seat access?

Even if there is you don't want to put someone back there. Even a minor impact could send there head bouncing off the bar and without a helmet you could have serious injuries

Two weeks ago a guy by my house was killed in a front end collision in his e30, had some rust but was a front end / corner impact and the car was so mangled it took them nearly 2 hours to get him out, I am not 100% sure but I think he died in route to the hospital. I was about a block behind him and traffic was cruising at about 45-50 so just because it tests a good or that you dont know of anyone doesnt mean it hasnt happened, cars are 20+ years old, somebody has had it happen to them

Real frontal crash tests are done at 40mph with a 40% offset. I don't think anyone has subjected an E30 to that kind of test but the E34 didn't do so well.

Have fun with that brain injury. Yes, an air bag would have helped.

Good comparison. No car can save you from everything, but you never wanna see the passenger compartment collapse like those VWs did. Looked like the Golf did even worse than the bug.

I'm not sure if modern cars are designed to do this as crash technologies have advanced (I know nothing of the topic though). We all know absorbing the kinetic/ residual energy within the structure rather the occupant is key, but surely having the engine take the brunt of the force (by the look of it) and move in that way would minimise the force the people experience? Again, I don't know anything when it comes to crash technology/ designs, just thinking out loud.
