That said, I bought the Makita as I already have bought into the batteries with other tools. If I didn't have Makita batteries/chargers I would have gone with the snap ring Bosch due to the modulation and weight.

All the motors are made in china. The tools are assembled in China or Mexico. Only a rare amount of tools are made in America.... None of which are mentioned above. One of the last true power tool plants was in Paris Tenn. It was owned by my company, and closed years ago due to the market. Like I said, power tools have little to no margin. Cutting costs in the late 90s meant going over seas, DeWalt used to be the tool every rep made fun of due to it's imported parts and mexican assembly plants.... however, due to their amazing marketing and sponserships in the past, everyone has been forced to go elsewhere for parts. "Cheap Chinese Crap" doesn't really apply anymore due to the demand of today's contractor. If everything is made over there, and the warranties for the most part haven't changed, then the materials have to be good quality.
Also, there hasn't been a can motor built in the US since I can't rmember when.

Keep in mind, these are 1/2 inch impacts. They are great for lug nuts and other large applications given the correct space is aloted to fit the tool. The main impact used would be a 3/8 impact and will not remove lugs for the most part. However, the 3/8ths are most used for auto and home applications.

Are the cordless ones able to unscrew pretty tight/rusty lugs?
Do you re-tighten by hand or are you confident that the impacts have enough torque?

Depends on what you are doing. Flywheel bolts probably won't come off with a 3/8th's, but a 1/2 inch will probably break them loose. When I put flywheel bolts on I use my impact then I make sure they are torqued to spec. I do the same with my air ratchet and lug bolts as well.
