boost the ix or a rwd e30

As many of you know i have an ix. I have MS (not installed) as well as all the necessary gauges already in my ix. Lately however, i have been second guessing introducing boost to the ix. Considering i have a large set of rpi rotors and calipers behind me on the floor i need to figure out what car i want to install this stuff on. Do i want a rwd e30 or do i want to be unique and go with my original plan to boost my ix?

note: i also have a straight up trade setup for my 318is for a modded 318is that would just need an m20 and i could boost that. My options are fairly open at this point.

I would say boost a rwd E30 and keep the iX for daily driving. You will run into more problems boosting an iX, and more longevity issues. I'd be unique, but will you ever really get that car to be where you want it? I know you've been dealing with the limited suspension options for a while.

And why trade for another 318iS if you just have to do an engine swap anyways? I'd keep the one you have, or just get a 325i.

years ago I used to have a very modified ix. It is a great car, awesome car in foul weather, but it is not very potent on a track (heavy and huge oversteer). Another problem I had were ripped front axle boots (every 2-3k miles) because the car was lowered... With few basic mods (chip, exhaust, light flywheel, maybe an Alpha N) and the 5 speed box the car is a joy to ride, but take it to the next level and you may compromise the ride.
      Just my $0.02

Are you talking about your Alpina replica? Didn't know you sold it. It was a clean car.

Putting money into a car because it will be rare or original isn't a valid reason.

Do what is practical, in this case: RWD.

              i always liked that ix

digitalwave. The car i would trade my 318is for is daniel's (lowen from way back when) modded 318is. Although I could probably find a nice car w/ an m20 in it and actually profit some from my 318is.

BTW these are the same conclusions i was coming to in my head last night.

I say boost it.. a refreshed drivetrain would hold up better than you think. and it would be FAST. :)

there's been recent discussion on the yahoo ix club about boosted ix's. the conclusion that was arrived at is that the drivetrain would hold up fine, as long as you don't try 3k rpm boosted clutch drops. I believe Sach Carlson is having Dinan build him an 89 ix turbo with 300+hp (nobody has more experience with these cars than Satch).

also limited suspension options blah blah blah, there are plenty of options available.. and 145lbs of extra drivetrain weight isn't going to matter much with 300whp.

at the 2003 Sigfest (e30 M3) meet (in NJ) there was a guy with white, Dinan Turbocharged ix. I don't have any pics, but the car was pretty nice, the owner said it was mostly stock, except for the suspension and brakes (and Turbo)

Wouldn't be as fast as a rwd with the same power.

yeah, it would be a 4.5 0-60 instead of 4.3.

Id be nervous about the t case holding up with that much power, but from Ive heard they are pretty solid. The front diff and boots as mentioned could pose problems as well.

Drivetrain loss and girly starts, probably a bigger difference than that.

its probably going to be a rwd e30, now i need to sell my 318is and find a m20powered car w/ some mods for a decent price.
