    Why does this happen?

A month ago my friends were driving on some twisties, I was passenger. My friend chasing was in his WRX and stayed in one gear for all of the twisties, probably 5 miles in total. When he pulled over and tried to put it in gear, it wouldn't go. Mind you this is a car with 9000 miles on it. I told him to pump the clutch a couple of times and then it went into gear.

Yesterday my friend was towing me out cause my car got stuck in dirt, he has a 95 Audi Quattro. It took a bit because my car was REALLY stuck so there was a lot of load on his entire car. When he turned his car off and turned it back on after my car was out, he couldn't put it into gear either. Told him to pump the clutch and it was completely fine.

    Any reason why this happens?

synchros not quite working, either worn or perhaps not broken in.

half the time my wife's Subaru won't go into reverse, I have to double clutch or go into 1st, then reverse. it's worse when it's cold.

why would he drive 5 miles of twisties in 1 gear? afraid to shift?

Would make sense, the Quattro has 240k on the clock and the Subaru is fairly new.

And it was a primarily 3rd gear twisty road, wasn't the best driver though so he was prob afraid to shift.

Drove the new forester auto with sport shift. 4spd auto garbage, thing was rough as sandpaper. Noisy too.

If it wasn't brand new I'd say they need to bleed the clutch.

Synchros are possibly worn or actual gears are mis-aligned (somewhat rare situation). Ive also notice it happens more often when a car is either cold or super hot? Either way its usually solved by double clutching, or dropping the selector rod into the adjacent gear.

Kind of off topic but how many of you guys always have to put the shifter into second before going into the first gear? I dont know if its just me but Im a bit ocd when it comes to downshifting.

just hit it with a hammer.
I don't even own this car anymore, but I'm too lazy to change the picture.
