i'm driving my e30 this winter - without snowtires, although my tires on the bottle caps are new. Today i practiced drifting our front turn around driveway. At least i have an LSD. I would rather put another car through the winter abuse though. My first car was a jeep grand cherokee - v8, fulltime 4 wheel drive. it was a beast. Then i slid it into a ditch.
Been so long since I lived in snow I miss it (92 lived in Reno) I grew up in Manhattan and love snow. None of my current cars have ever seen a real winter (below 55 degrees) I was in snow in Yosemite in 2000 in freaking April, then in December I was there for a week at the Ahwahnee hotel and there was none! California is weird!
In the snow storm on Thursday, I was traveling up 93 North.
2 cars locked up and spun infront of me... having no time to stop without t-boning one, and cars on my right so i couldnt swerve... I was forced down into the ditch on the left side of the road.
Full counter lock, pedal floored, 4 snow tires = Chris comes flying out of the ditch like a WRC champ after avoiding both cars, 1 pole, and a culvert.
Damage = cracked front headlight :( But the mtech came out OK!
Winter car is in the works if I can swing it.... Silver 318is :pimp:
Scott, Wranglers are good, but very prone to fliping so be careful. A hardtop makes it 100X more tollerable too.
all seasons+~100lbs of weight in the back+LSD=plenty for NC snows. It works fine and its fun racing range rovers, etc. Honestly though, i'm forced into making due for financial reasons. Oh well.
I will admit though scott, wronglers are fun in moderation, I'd damn well take one over a ix, although I'd need a damn hard top and doors if I was rocking one for the winter. I think a cherokee would be a better option, although harder to find in manual/i6. FWIW, my first car was a 94 wrangler.
My ix did good in the little snow we had last week, I am curious to see how it does when I actually have all 4 tires trying to pull me up a snowy incline~
i did have to upgrade to a 1000amp battery, the 850 one that came with it had a hard time starting when it was below 20, it takes up the entire battery tray in the rear and the weight is offset by some tools, a shovel and some snowchains on the other side.

I've got a hard top and full doors :) I'm no sucker. It's not that bad, in all fairness - I was expecting a much LOUDER ride. Definitely bearable.
Chris - stop trying to rally your car. For real. And you're lucky the mtech 1 made it out alive...TAKE THE DAMN THING OFF FOR THE WINTER!
Glad to hear you're ok.
I've had like 4 Cherokees, they were a blast too, but I want a Wrangler because I can drive it year round - great in the snow and fun in the summer without the top and doors. Pretty much the only car I can picture driving year round (with the e30 as my other car, of course!)
Dave, why did they pull you over all the time in the Wrangler?
It cant come off... I just sold the plastic front bumper, and sold the late model front valance. I also didnt feel like splicing a bunch of wires to make connections for turn signals/side markers.
If it gets damaged, it gets damaged. I can always buy another. I'm not keeping the black car anymore. May not even keep a non-M e30 after graduation... only time will tell.
Cheers honky, I'll be down in the next 2 weeks to get my airdam... got a 318is to mount it on for the winter! :pimp:

Getting out of the non-m e30 world? I'll believe it when I see it ;)
So you're selling the black car? Interesting...and what of the white car?
