All of the ones that I've see have not a single Porsche crest on any glass panel. It's all VW.

IIRC the placard even says VW...

Nope, there is a porsche crest on the hood, depending on the trim level, there is PORSCHE lettering inbetween the tail lights in a reflectors & on the intake screen behind the rear window there is chrome PORSCHE lettering on the grill.

The european cars were sold through VW dealers and had the VW badging in the rear.

ive had my current 911 for 8 years and worked on many 911s both professionally and personally.

-They are indeed $20k cars any way you slice it, pay now or pay later.
-Parts are expensive and can seem like gouging.
-They are loosly based on the aircooled beetle in that they are rear aircooled boxer engines with torsion bar suspension but the similarities really end there. They do not share any mentionable parts, you cannot make a 911 out of a bug.
-They are very easy to work on..anyone that says otherwise lacks proper tools or sufficient experience. Frankly, cars do not get much simpler than any 911 before 1989.

Comparing a E30 to 911 seems unnatural. apples and oranges, both good in their own right

i have always admired the 914s...mid engine, and extra low car...

i like what i like. hence the "imo"

No doubt. It was never my intention to compare the two. But sometimes at school lunch you trade your apple for an orange :p

                    Gotcha...

If you can afford to own and maintain an old 911 you can afford to have both the E30 and the Porsche (even if you do the labor). You dont want to squeeze yourself in one of these, it will only make the ownership experience suck.... You can buy and modify a whole E30 for the price of one meaningful 911 upgrade.

Just hold tight till you have the means. A little patience now will make it much sweeter later.

Coming from someone who previously worked at a Porsche dealership, seen new and old ones...I can tell you they are expensive, regardless of year. Not to mention like any German car, they are meant to be maintenanced. but Porsche has a nice standing in racing history and they definitely take pride in that..
