Dude, just forget the Porsche, I have a perfect solution.

Sell your E30 cab, and use the profits to buy two cars:

    E30 coupe for the track

VW Type 3 Fastback (Porsche without the price)

You can take the engine out of a Type 3 in less than an hour, and rebuild the entire thing in less than three hours for less than the price of tires for a Porsche. Built it and have a badass little toy.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I completely understand that it is a different game when it comes to parts and cost and that there is no such thing as a cheap 911. I do love the e30 m3 but I wouldn't get rid of the vert and the e24 for one. I have owned e30 coupes and will again. My wife really wanted us to do a vert so we went that direction on this project and I have to say I have really enjoyed it. It is not as tight as a coupe, but pretty damn close on the street (not track)with ie3 springs, billy sports, and 17 Kosei K1's.
And about seeing the ZO6's at VIR, freaking amazing! Especially seeing them on the back stretch! A C5 ZO6 is another car I will have to own one day. If they had a backseat so I could pick my two daughters up from school occasionally, I would have one now.

Haha! Not a bad idea! But I think I would probably pick up a C4 vette if I had a backup e30 coupe for the street and track the vette. I may wind up doing this anyway, selling the vert or e24, keeping one and getting a true sports car for the track, i.e. porsche or vette.

Stay away from late 70's 911's unless they are swapped with with a later motronic 3.2 engine. The late 70's cars have "thermal-reactors" which are emissions garbage preheaters for the heads. They use exhaust heat to warm them up and leak and can cause overheating issues in hotter climates. Look for an early 80's 911sc, you will be much happier.
Just trying to let him know ahead of time,he is a noobie to the porsche world. You are right when it comes to those (thermo reactor's). They are P.O.S BMW did the same thing too.

            A C4 ZR-1 is a faster car than a C5 ZO6.

Yes, yes it is. It is also extremely hard to find and very expensive. It is one of the best vettes ever built. Also, one of the things that is great about the ZO6 is it is a sbc. The ZR-1 is not, which equates to higher expense with motor work. And before anyone argues that it is, I know it is an lt5, but it is a lotus design with dohc.

My wife replaced a 993 C4 with her 325iX because she was sick of having two cars that were broken ALL THE TIME. Now, we just have the 993 Turbo. Granted, that's a different league of complexity from the ones that you are looking at, but... Our E30s are always ready to drive. Having the Porsche around is great, but not something I would want to depend on (not even depend on it for a fun car to drive occasionally).

Porsche shops are also very used to open wallets. My favorite one was "Your check engine light is on. We need to rebuild the engine."

                            911 > e30

                            (except e30 m3)

This statement is comming from someone who has never owned one.

I do, and while i love the car, even being a 914-6 with the FI 2.4 290 HP EURO S motor, it is just ok in the performance and handling. The suspension is pretty primative and rides like crap when you lower them at all.

You might think, like most people that they are the "same " as a VW, nothing is farther from the truth.
