whos had experience with porsche 911's?

ive always been a fan of the 911s, but lately I feel it isnt exactly the car i grew up believing it to be. ive been browsing rennlist and im having a tough time convincing myself that this would be the natural progression of my car collection. i feel like im better off building up my E30 than getting a 911.

    thoughts?

There's a world of differences between the two!
At the risk of oversimplying things ... the 911 is MUCH more complicated and, naturally, costs more to maintain. Driving a 911 fast requires a totally different mindset too. The 911 is truly special ... just make sure your wallet can handle it.

PKR said it pretty well, although i disagree on the complexity level. Do you do your own mechanical work? What are intentions for the car? What model years are you looking at?

Try to find someone that will let you drive theirs.

I've thought about it too. But every time I think about it or any other car I think how much more i'd rather put the money into my e30. and how much better my e30 would be if I put that equivalent amount of money into it.

If you are thinking in terms of classic 911's they are decidedly more money than an e30 and there are very few that are year round DD's. If you are thinking newer, I had an 04 and it was bullet proof. The only repair in 18 months and 20k was a license plate bulb. Can't say that about any BMW Ive owned (or any other new car for that matter).

I always thought a nice mid to late 80's 911 would natrually be the progression from my e30.

then I got a job doing valet and this old guy had this sweet lookin late 80's 911 with a whale tail. Looked awesome from the outside!

Once I got inside, it felt more sparce and primitive than my dad's 1975 Volvo 245. I also didn't like the layout of the interior.

The drive was pretty nice. Very small and TIGHT, just right actually. Felt like I was piloting around in a little bathtub to be honest. and the sounds were outta this world! I also enjoyed the smallness of the car. It's like there was NOTHING extra that wasn't needed. Reminded me of riding a motorbike with it's simplicity.

But after it all, I really didn't like the interior. It just wasn't for me to be honest.

Try one out, I'm sure you'll have your own thoughts on it.
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

You only disagree about the complexity level because you have an older one. K's 993TT is *very* complex and a cranky bitch. It's stored until I have time to rip it apart.

Also, anything that is not a BMW is automatically more complex to work on simply due to the lower quality of repair manuals and parts catalogs.

80's 911's can be awesome if you buy the right one, not sure I would want one as a dd though, would be fun for a weekend toy/project though

I had a 1999 911 c2. It was an amazing car. If you have the opertunity you should take it. My 99 was the most reliable car iv owned the only thing it did to me was the shift cable snapped. It was only a $300 repair and she was back on her way!

Mine is a 77 and is my track car. Very nimble and an absolute blast to drive. Bullet proof is an understatement. I have not had a single issue and I drive hard.

I also daily drive it a lot and take it to shows.

I too have been looking at mid 80s wide body style. The really nice ones are upper 20s low 30s. Which years are better to own?
