So we agree that it doesn't help anything for our E30s?

Double clutching in a synchromesh gearbox is kinda pointless. I mean yes, it does cut down wear, but it's kinda like saying you can't run anything but a 14x6 wheel or else you will put undue wear on your wheel bearings.

Oh and try fatburger. You can get a burger and fries for 1.95 waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles.

This is almost like an old school r3v thread.

no, it reduces wear on your syncros.

now whether you care or not depends on your wallet or how long you intend to keep your car or current driveline

in a weaker transmission, like my girlfriend's geo metro, after enough abuse it's simply not possible to downshift into 2nd or first *without* rev-matching.

in a stronger transmission like the getrag 260 you may not notice it after a hundred or two hundred thousand miles...but whoever changes your oil (assuming you even do change your oil) will see the molybdenum (which is a whole lot more expensive than typical brass syncros).

you're right to note that not double (de)clutching risks premature wear of the pressure plate...but would you rather wear out a consumable or the internals of your extremely expensive and officially non-serviceable transmission?

your syncros are there to smoothly *up* shift. using them to down shift is senseless wear
Das ist nicht nur nicht richtig, es ist nicht einmal falsch!

Alright, so the synchros will still wear faster at road speeds, faster enough to make a big difference. And just to clarify, I do heel-toe on downshifts to save the synchros and that's what made me curious about double-clutching on upshifts. So the G260 is "officially non-serviceable?" My fault; I'm used to a few particular gearboxes that open up pretty readily and I'm (obviously) less familiar with this one. And I do change my oil, along with all the other work. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it.

it doesn't do anything for upshifting except for possibly 1st to 2nd when the tranny is cold. in fact, blipping the throttle on the upshift is counter-productive because revving is used to get the input shaft to match the next gear (which is lower on the upshift)

That makes sense. I think the only time a double-clutch with a blip would be helpful on an upshift is in something with an old box and a free-revving motor like one of the old race cars we see. I guess it's just a problem of limited perspective on my part.

just r3v match and change fluids in respectable intervals. Your internals will never wear out.
