      I've never had that much trouble with all seasons in the snow. It's not ideal but it can be done. Just drive slowly and carefully. And practice. Not that I'm suggesting it.

      My e30 with a 5 speed was a lot easier to control than the e34 touring with an auto. It's pretty much like driving a large boat. You sort of point it in a direction and hope it goes.

            I had an old 'Dart that I drove in the snow too (Hi JasonC!). It was an auto. It sucked so bad, the engine had so much torque and the brakes were so poor that when I finally was able to stop at a light, the rear tires would continue to rotate and the car would inch sideways. I'd have to put it in neutral and then when I put it back in gear, it would lurch sideways.

            I learned a LOT in that car about driving in the snow though. It really was horrible.

              I really think driving cars that are terrible in the snow (72 beetle, e34 touring and even the e30) has taught me how to drive cars in snow more than anything else.

              My old '95 Safari was surprisingly amazing in snow.

                e30's generally oversteer anyway. all seasons will give you the front end slippage you need to get just enough understeer.:p

                      yeah, that's exactly what I'd prefer. to understeer, right into a tree/ditch/bus.

                        Exactly. Or, in an oversteer situation, losing front grip so you can't bring the front end back to where the rear is going... Front end grip is important.

                          Ok, now that that is out of way, what do you think happens when you go around a corner with front snows and rear all seasons? nothing like watching the tail of your car come up along side you because you were too cheap to pay for four used snow tires.

                            < Driving on crappy all seasons in the winter for the last 4 years with an LSD. 360" average snowfall here, we've had 18" fall in the last 72 hours and I drove the BMW to work today with minimal issues after getting about 10" overnight, before 8am. I have more problems with ripping my front valence off on poorly plowed roads than actually getting around, or stuck. As said before, smooth driving and anticipation are key e.g, don't stop on hills without a plan, park facing downhill with no way out, tailgate, speed, etc. Now I have a Blazer for snow days, so it's a non-issue which is the best solution imo. 4x4 ftw.
