I have always been a die hard Toyota guy. I always will.
I have had the reliability of toyotas proven to me time and time again. it all started when a good friend of mine got a 81 Celica when I was in highschool. that thing would not fucking die. I have a Toyota Tacoma 4x4 that I drive the shit out of on the road and especially off. I have put 200k of hard miles on it with 33 inch tires, which is harder on everything (31's are stock) and I have never had anything break on the trail and leave me stranded. something that is pretty common for Jeeps and shitty american 4x4's. I also still have the stock drivetrain that has heald up fine till I broke a couple teeth on my pinion gear a couple months ago.

I will stand up and say that toyotas are more reliable than any american POS, VW's, Land Rovers, alot of others.
but I wouldn't say the same for BMW or Mercs.
I will say that my Tacoma doesn't leak an ounce of oil at all, and my e30 does eat a bit, but who gives a shit, you should check your oil anyway, whats the big fucking deal if you half to add some oil every now and again.
I would drive a scion TC, but I wouldn't buy it over an e36 m3 I could get for the same price. or an M coupe I could get for a couple grand more.

scions are uglier then my ass
      a lot is 2 words

how would you know if american trucks always break? i duno if you know what your talking about... i will say that toyotas are really reliable, my brother had one that we trashed on, and it had 38's, but domestic trucks don't break that often either. most have been tamperd with, which is why they break, but if you put the right diffs in, and tranny, then your fine.

I suppose BMWs are for more DIY type folks, that do purposeful mods... while the Jap imports are made for the other market of DIY that like to do mods for show.

          Let's see in 20 years :P

I really love toyota's, but every scion I've been in just didn't feel solid.

Not anymore. You cant work on modern cars anymore without loads of computer tools to read all the elecrtonics of the cars. These tools cost thousands. :(

^^ total truth - its putting a lot of old indi shops out of business because they cannot affort the 10k investment for fault code readers and other bmw electronic diagnostic tools. If something happens to one of my e30's i know what the problem is usually (or have a good idea) and i can fix said problem myself (most of the time)... the same cannot be said for my e36...

                People are just ignorant.

                Example:
I pull into a gas station and begin to refuel my car, a newly repainted 2002 w/ an aftermarket turbo. Premium grade or higher is the only choice for a turbocharged car, so this is what I was pumping. A teenage girl in a Chevy Cavalier (screams quality) pulls into the gas station and stops right in front of me. She says, "You know that that(premium) gas doesn't make your car go faster." She finishes her statement off with a real prissy know-it-all look. I don't say a word and simply reply with a blank stare. Still staring at me she proceeds to accelerate away --- right into a gasoline tanker truck refilling the gas station's tanks. Premium grade gasoline - 2.20/gallon, seeing her hit a gas tanker - priceless.

I know cuz my uncle owns an independent shop and each year the tools are more expensive. Im not even going to tell you the diagnostic tools of Porches. Easily double BMWs. Thats how the stealers can screw the indy shops a little bit more, by pricing the tools exorbitantly.

It has just been my expereance that they break more often than jap trucks do. I drove a 91 Ford Explorer in Highschool, and I had all kinds of problems with it. the tranny blew up with less than 70,000 miles. I replaced more stuff on that thing than I have on my tacoma in 200,000, and I only drove it for a couple of years.
