A+ thread. id rather have the older styling with heart transplants. nothing wrong with giving it a smaller faster power plant while keeping the class that an older car holds

If I'd buy a new car it would probably end up being JDM YO!!! ... or not, but as in EVO 9, which is 10 years old already :nice:... or 04-07 Impreza, which I got a liking for after doing some work and driving a Solberg edition, was alot of fun, and I found myself just standing there staring at it, thinking "ye....I'd rock that bitch".. but obviously not comparable to an E30 M3, which in my own subjective opinion is alot more fun to drive.
I guess a R34 Skyline isn't under the category of new cars...
Those are the "new" cars that I can think of atm that I can see myself driving right now..ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)Be Afraid Of The Future

The problem with new cars is most of them are mass produced pieces of crap coasting on their brand reputation. The days of swapping out suspension, wheels, ECUs, cams, etc. are over. The things that made companies like BMW great in the 80s and 90s are long gone; whatever specialness BMW was building into their cars has been exorcised out in favor of profits and brand whoring. I'm picking on BMW because this is a BMW forum.... but I believe this issue is something that most manufacturers are wrestling with and it will be interesting to see what happens in 10 years when everyone wakes up and realizes their favorite luxury brand is just a xeroxed marshmellow. The only special cars left these days, IMO, are the hand made exotics and botique cars.Mike

I love timeless car make/models, which I find 99% of this from cars pre 99. Most new cars I scoff when I see people spending ridiculous amounts of money on them. Sure I think my mom’s new charger looks “ok” but it really is a big ol pile of junk imo, 20k on the thing and the crappy plastic intake mani is already leaking, oh and everyone and their mama’s have one (literally in my case, lol).
Also just the basic knowledge and taste the status quo has towards automobile consumerism lacks horribly imo. They want to spend way more money than their budgets allow and also make payments on a car for 3+ years (not that anything is wrong with that but I enjoy not having the extra bill just to have a “new” car).
I would much rather drive a classic muscle car, sweet early-mid 90’s import (there are a few 80’s models I like as well) or a well-balanced, elegant BMW (pre 99). A car that I can feel the authenticity of and offers a unique and pleasurable driving experience, along with a close following sub culture, not to mention I can pay for it out of pocket or at least with a “small” loan that I can pay off in 1-2 years.
I do not make much for income, even though I am “middle class” I gross a poverty level amount barely able to cover cost of living (oh the principles of social stratification...).

I'm pretty happy knowing my wife and daughter are driving around with 6 to 8 airbags in a car that was designed with alot more safety than an e30. Sure the newer cars are different (I love my e30s) but new cars are nice to roll in sometimes too.
Now I will never pay 50K for a new car though............

^ Yes.
I've never bagged on anyone I've seen posting a "Hai guis, check out the 200k mile e30 I just bought for the wife!" thread like I've seen a bunch of times over the years, but it's always been a bit of a head scratcher for me.
To each his own, but I don't want my wife (and kids if/when) sharing the road with all the current behemoths in a two decade+ old compact car with two decade+ old safety technology.'84 318i - Lapisblau/Schwarz (in cryosleep)

I cannot even fit my pinky in the engine bay with any of the new car. The E30 engine is so simple and the bay has plenty of room to work. And, just think of all the electronics controlling everything in the new car...huge headache. Yes, new cars are a lot safer, but I think defensive and attentive driving can help big time. But then again, I would never let my daughter drives a car without air bags and other safety features.

ITT, disillusioned poor people.
There are innumerable new or upcoming cars I'd love to own/drive. The ATS, F30 320i, the Golf R, Focus ST, hell, even the Chevy Cruze. The FR-S/BRZ, Abarth 500, skyactiv Mazda's, Regal GS, upcoming Merc CLA, the 991 Carrera, and whatever the new Acura NSX is going to be. Plus new trucks from Ford and Chevy are looking better than ever.
The E30 is still fun, still capable, and still nice. But hand me the keys to any of the above mentioned cars vs. a run-of-the-mill, but nicely maintained E30... I'll take the new car. That's why I'm driving a MKV right now.

Would I drive a new car if it were free? Probably, the technology and engineering going into some (some, not all) of today's cars is absolutely phenomenal. But I can't justify having a ridiculous car payment + insurance costs when I can already get so much driving pleasure out of the e30.
When the roads suck, I just hop in my 4x4 Jeep XJ and that takes me wherever else I want to go. It's got 227k on it and shows no signs of slowing down. I just fix stuff that's all easily serviceable whenever anything breaks and keep on going for a mere fraction of the cost of a new car payment.
Until I have enough extra cash floating around to buy something new outright, I'll keep my debts at student loans only.'87 325is - Schwarz/Schwarz
